Trivia Quiz: Runoff Bonus Round

Thu Jan 25, 2001 10:53 am

I can't help myself....somebody stop me.....
Anyway, I seem to be having a hard time waiting a week between trivia quizzes....plus I love them, and I'm just itching to have a happy, lucky winner...and I know many of you are too!
So, to hell with these "weekly" trivia quizzes.
I'm just going to start randomly posting them...that adds to the fun as well!

So, anyway, here's the lowdown.
Since there was no winner from the last two quizzes, the quiz I'm about to present will be a real "winner".

The winner of todays quiz shall recieve:

1 new in the box Dragon Wings Pan Am 727-200

A Reno Air collectors starter set consisting of old timetables, luggage tags, ticket jackets, and an 8"X10" color advertisement for flying first class, suitable for framing.

In addition to the above prizes, the lucky winner will also be able to choose from ONE of the following as well:

1. Long Prosper PSA 727 model
2. Dragon Wings/Jet X AirCal 737-300 model
3. Valujet bumper sticker and refrigerator magnet.

Good luck.

1. What is the full name of SABENA, from which the acronym name is derived?

2. What was Avianca called before it was Avianca?

3. What Middle Eastern Flag carrier was born out of a single DC-3 that was a gift from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt?

4. Name at least 6 US airlines to have operated the BAC-111 in passenger service.

5. What did "DAN"-Air stand for?

6. What US airline was formed as a subsidiary company of Kimberly-Clark Corporation?

7. Name two Mexican airlines to have operated the F-100.

8. True or False: Trans-Australia Airlines was merged into QANTAS in 1993.

9. Who were the three launch airlines for the F-100?

10. What airline did Airbus design the double-bogie landing gear for the A320 for?

I only know the SABENA question
SABENA stands for:
Societe Anonyme Belge d'Exploitation de la Navigation Aerienne

2.) It was called SCADTA (Sociedad Colombo-Alamana de Transportes Aereos).

3.) Saudi Arabian Airlines Corporation (Later known as 'Saudia' and, in the present, 'Saudi Arabian')

6.) Midwest Express

7.) Mexicana, Aviacsa.

8.) False. TAA became Australia Airlines before QANTAS took them over.

9.) Swissair, American and USAir... GPA Fokker 100, Ltd. was a partnership between Fokker and another company to place F-100 with other airlines, so if you want to count them as the second customer, so be it (making American the third customer), but it's difficult to count the same company that produces the aircraft as a 'customer'.

10.) Indian Airlines

RE: Trivia Quiz: Runoff Bonus Round

Thu Jan 25, 2001 12:47 pm

After carefully viewing the posts and reading my original rules, I'm excited to announce that VirginFlyer is the winner of this trivia quiz! This was a tough choice due to the fact that he posted all 10 answers correctly, but then followed it up with a post containing one incorrect answer.
But by the rules I laid down, they simply said that whoever is the first person to correctly answer all 10 questions will be deemed the winner. No mention was made of a situation involving someone answering all questions correctly, but then following it up with a post containing a wrong answer.
So, here are the correct answers, as posted by VirginFlyer:

Username: VirginFlyer
Posted 2001-01-25 03:53:44 and read 39 times.
1. Société Anonyme Belge d'Exploitation de la Navigation Aérienne

2. SCADTA

3. Saudi Arabian Airlines - Just found another book.

4. American, Mohawk, Braniff, Alleghny, USAir, Pacific Express

5. Davies And Newman holdings

6. Midwest Express

7. Aviacsa, Mexicana

8. False - at the time of the merger, it was called Australian Airlines, not TAA

9. USAir, Swissair, KLM

10. Indian Airlines

So again, congratulations to VirginFlyer as the winner. He will receive the Pan Am Dragon Wings 727-200 model, the Reno Air items, and can choose one of the additional third prizes.

This was another Gore/Bush type contest, hotly contested by VirginFlyer and N863DA.

VirginFlyer:
I will be contacting you via e-mail shortly for your shipping address. Please be sure to e-mail back to me your choice for the third prize as well as the address you would like the items shipped to.

Stay tuned for the next quiz, which will be posted within the next few days.
