Guess This Plane.....

Sat Jan 27, 2001 7:47 pm

I was out golfing this morning here in Dhaka, Bangladesh (DAC) and at about....noon, a big military transport climbed out from the airport and turned west. It looked like a C-5 or Antonov AN-124. But it had winglets, which i don't think either of these planes have. It was a very dark grey, with military marking and some sort of a yellow squadron marking on the tail. What kind of plane was this? What was it doing in Dhaka? And from what country is it probably from?

Thanks

C-17

Was the yellow band a strip that ran from leading to trailing edge of the tail? Looked to be about a third of the way up on the tail. There would have been lettering on it that stated the home base.

Based on what you told me I am going to guess that aircraft is out of Dover.

Yep, that's it. I saw one about 2 weeks ago when I was at work near MCO. It was probably a few thousand feet up. I'm not big on military stuff, but it was cool looking.

Heard on local (Dallas) news that emergency supplies were pre-positioned in Turin, Italy and Guam. So--it could be emergency supplies hop-scotching its way from Guam to the Indian earthquake relief effort. Dhaka sounds roughly in that line of flight...

Yes, that sounds like a good assumption Dadoftyler. It did climb out and head west. (The runway runs North/South) Well, hopefully I'll see more flying out of here in the next few days! Though it is surprising that they would stop here, as Bangladesh has been rated as the most expensive fuel in the world. But, i guess the US donates so much aid, and help to this country, they have some (hehe) authority and can "lower" the prices....hehehe...good 'ol uncle sam!!!

Odds are it came from Charleston AFB, SC or Travis AFB,CA, which are large operators of C-17, Judging that it was in Dhaka, i would say Travis AFB...

Dover AFB does not operate the C-17, I have been there many times and the C-5, C-141, and KC-10 are what is operated out of Dover.

The yellow stripe is that of Charleston. Travis does'nt operate a single C-17. The only C-17's that pass through there are transit. The same is true for Dover. The following are based:

Travis: C-5, KC-10
Dover:C-5
McGuire:KC-10,C-141,KC-135
McChord:C-17,C-141
Charleston:C-17,C-141
Altus(AETC):C-5,C-17,KC-135,KC-10,

The first five bases operate the aircraft on a shared program of active duty, and resreve component.
