Longest ROUTE--- JFK-JHN?!?!

Mon Jan 29, 2001 3:23 pm

Hey! I was thinking about the longest non-stop route in the world, and I looked up some things.

I found on South African Airways Non-stop New York JFK to Johannesburg, South Africa which is 7960 miles.

I also found South Africa Airways Atlanta to Johannesburg.

Also, Los Anngeles to Melbourne, Australia.

And I believe in the summer, EL AL goes Los Angeles to Israel, non-stop!!!

Which is it?!?! Does anybody know? Or does anybody have any other routes they think are outrageously long?!?!

Tell please!

This comes up very frequently -- you can probably search the archives.

Anyway, the answer is ATL-JNB. Get on expedia.com and pull the mileage for it and compare to other flights if you're in doubt.

Longest Route Is ATL-JNB, But...

Mon Jan 29, 2001 4:15 pm

Here are the great circle distances for the flights you described:

JFK-JNB: 6917NM
ATL-JNB: 7326NM
LAX-MEL: 6891NM
LAX-TLV: 6575NM

Just out of interest, who flys the JFK and ATL to JNB route?

Also, with the advent of the A340-500 we will see this route, which will take first place:

SIN-LAX: 7643NM

Anyone else know other planned A340-500 routes?

Hey---VirginFlyer---

Mon Jan 29, 2001 4:23 pm

Out of curiosity...how is ATL-JNB longer than JFK-JNB?!

Also, Doesnt Singapore Air already go SIN-LAX? I always go to LAX to take pictures and see Singapore Air taking off to Singapore...am I wrong?

Lastly, out of curiosity---how is Tel Aviv-LAX shorter?!

FYI,
SIA currently flies to LAX with a stopover at TPE, if i'm not mistaken. SIA doesn't go to LAX non-stop.

How are they? Because they are.
I got the info from the
Great circle flight path display

Finally, SIA does fly to LAX, but via Taipei at present...

SIA flies to Seoul out of SFO with the 340s, they might also fly the same route out of LAX explaining their presence.

The old Gulf Air route - Bahrain - New York JFK was 6608 based on the great circle site above?

Did you notice that from Bahrain with the 777-200LR an airline could reach any city on the planet, non-stop?

Talk about the ultimate global network?

PS - some more routes - BAH-SYD, 7771nm - BAH-ATL, 7364nm - BAH-EZE, 8229nm.

I'm fairly sure that SQ will also fly SIN-SFO in the new planes. I guess in addition to SEL, SQ flies via HKG to grab some of that overseas Chinese market.

El Al operates a LAX-TLV (LY106) leg twice a week during summer with a 744, the flight to LAX stops at JFK.
This summer it will be operated though by a 777 (!)
Anyway, El Al used to fly few years ago TLV-LAX non-stop!

I thought UAL's HKG-ORD route is currently the longest route. (Correct me if I am wrong)

The HKG-JFK route will be the longest from April 2001 onwards.

longest route mentioned here is definetely ATL-JNB (surprises me that SQ doesn't fly the SIN-SFO nonstop then, would only be 36nm further)
Consider also EZE-SYD
Does Qantas go the GIG-SYD route 7355 nm, 8464 mi ??

I UNDERSTAND EMITRATES ARE PLANNING TO OPERATE DXB-LAX NON STOP USING A B777 STARTING APRIL 2001. THE TRIP TIME IS EXPECTED TO BE 17-18 HOURS.

Newark to NYC is 7008 nm?! Was there some massive plate movement or something that I don't know about? Big grin Just kidding.

JNB-ATL is the longest nonstop flight currently operated AFAIK.

I don't wanna be in any one of those routes mentioned above. That is too long for me (17-18 hrs). I think Boeing and Airbus should make supersonic jets.  Big thumbs up

Correct this please.

Is Atlanta - Johannesburg NONSTOP????

I know alot of you use expedia, but I'd like to see something from a REAL CRS.. not a java based application.

I won't be back in the office until wednesday, but I'll have one of the girls pull it up tomorrow..

Yes, ATL-JNB is non-stop. I can attest to it because I flew on it (it's operated by SAA, but code-shared with DL) last February. The return flight makes a stop-over in some random island on the way -- I believe it was SID (Cape Verde?) for refueling.

On ATL-JNB, the captain was wise enough not to mention we were on the longest non-stop flight in the world until we landed safely at JNB and were taxiing.

Also to note the plane was nowhere near full -- about 30-40% by my estimate. I've overheard rumours this has to do with keeping down the weight because of the long range of the flight (fuel usage), but I'm not sure if that's true, or I was just on it on a slow day.

EZE SYD does not operate direct it goes via AKL both ways on QF and AR services.
