For Delta Employees

During my last day at work management held a drawing for gift certificates ranging from $50-$1000. Not all were winners. From what I heard only 40 percent were winners and I only heard of one person of around a couple of hundred winning the top prize. Many employees were not very happy at the outcome as they did not win. At the time of the drawing I was told this was a small thank you for the difficult time over the holiday period but when I returned home and had time to read the enclosed letter I found that the drawing covered the entire year. Over the last year DL has had one of its best years ever profitwise. How does this make you feel? How do you feel when you read the news and see that AA will be splitting 300 million with their 100,000 employees? For most DL employees gone are the days of profit sharing, raises, bonuses, and stock options. What are your opinions?

Funny you should post that right now. I just redeemed my "Thanks a Million" certificate for a measly pair of binoculars and a pocketknife.

Three S1R flight days. What a slap in the face.

I think that with the amount of money Delta made last year, it is an outright crime that Delta management did not split some of the profits with us.

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps DL IS giving us a bonus. One million split amongst the 75,000 of us as compared to AA sharing 300M with their 100K employees but of course not all of us were "winners" in the drawing but it sounds that you came out ahead of most others. I hope you can use your new binoculars to see into the future and the future of DL!!! Were you a silver or bronze winner?

I was a bronze. Some of the guys/girls that didn't get anything were really pissed.

I don't blame them. If AA can afford to buy TWA and give 300 million bucks to its employees, surely Delta can afford to do the same or better for us.

So if you're in management this is not just great but excellent as it raises jealousy amongst local station employees by keeping their vision focused locally amongst co-workers and pitting them against each other in a "contest" (drawing) and distracts the employees from the overall big picture while the management tends to other things such as the next way to make employees happy without having them a raise, bonus, or anything else. The next time you see a pilot feel free to ask him what he/she won in the drawing. RIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHTTTT!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not saying that everyone at AA is a millionaire but nowadays they seem a lot closer than the lowly DL employees. The latest "Aviation Daily" from 1/24/01 shows the productivity index in graph form of the combined IATA airlines as $183,000 per employee, while at DL this same index was $189,041 per employee. (YES, PER EMPLOYEE!) The average RPK (revenue passenger kilometer) per employee was 1.9M while at DL alone it was 2.3M. I'm so happy and feel chills down my spine that the DL management could dig deep in their pockets and was able to give out some binoculars and pocketknives to 40% of their employees while leaving the other 60% as losers in the faces of their coworkers. Now would any other DL employees out there wish to discuss loss of morale or lagging service issues?

Dear "Uncle Leo", I praise you and your every word!!! Please speak more!!! Your "Simply Random Rewards Program" is just the best. Please allow me to kiss your feet. What could be better than turning employees against each other in the name of a trinket prize to parade around in front of your loser co-workers who weren't good enough to draw the "correct" envelope while at the same time distracting them from other priorities??? You are just way too smart for the rest of us to comprehend. I'm just so terribly happy that my co-worker in San Francisco got a pocketknife and binoculars instead of the average $3000.00 each that the AA employees got. It just brings tears to my eyes dear uncle. Could I possibly purchase a tissue from you in my time of need?

I received a bronze award as well. I was the only one from our dept. to win anything. I chose the 5" B&W TV. You won't see me complaining about free stuff.......
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Hey I dont think you all should be complaining that much! Right now I am typing this on my brand new laptop that I saved About $1500 on, and during the past year my family and i have taken about 300 flights combined in which we paid absolutely nothing for except international taxes to Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Bombay, and Grand Cayman which i think added up to a grand total of twenty bucks. Also more than half of those were in first class. Oh, and my mom; who works for delta quit her job with American a couple years ago and is making 2 dollars more an hour than she did there.

Hey maybe It isnt that bad after all?!

I think the timing of this half baked "reward" program was very bad to coincide with AA announcment. I also have a problem eith the attendance "reward" program that FA's might get but tech ops wouldn't because our attendence is already good.

As for that laptop that Delta15 is now using, you didn't get great deal. Go shop around on the internet. Similar deals are out there.

Don't feel bad. At UA, with all the BS we had to put up with over the summer, we are making no progress whatsoever with the company on our contract which was up in July 2000. We want raises and job security, they want us to take paycuts and lay us off.

Since the program started in 1996, the airline has given away 83 sport utility vehicles -- including tax, title, license and gift tax paid by the company -- worth $3.3 million.

UA had a program that rewarded attendence too. We would get either a free trip, extra buddy passes, or a savings bond. It was popular among employees. Unfotunatly they have discontinued it.

And this is just for people showing up to work like they are suppose to. They also give bonuses up to $100 for every month they are in the top three in on-time performance. Or course that hasn't happened for a while.

However, they are some of the lowest paid in the business. But programs like this have a tremendous effect on employee morale. Just look at the comments above to get an idea of how people feel about this.

Actually, CO employees did get their bonus for the December on-time performance. They also got another bonus last week to celebrate "Independance Day" - the repurchase of 17% of their stock from Northwest.

There is a reason that the labor at CO loves Gordon, and his innovative programs like this and the "Gordon and Greg Roadshow" (where him and Greg Brenneman travel around the country and hold town-hall meetings with frontline employees at various stations) are a huge contributing factor.

Yah i wonder what percent of continental employees get one of these cars; .005%. They really picked out a program that gets all the employees involved if they have perfect attendance. Way to go Continental!

How many Continental Employees got the $100 bonus? 100%. So how many with Delta, Delta15?

And what was the laptop for? Was it perfect attendance? Or was it a special deal; a thing that ALL major airlines have?

BTW: Employees get systemwide flights on CO, D15, not just with DL. I'm guessing that you never paid for a ticket in your life. You are DL's Blink182.

BTW2: I have neither flown CO/DL, and no one in my family or friends is related to them.

Don't worry about Delta15. In another 10-15 years his umbilical cord will be severed/clamped and his story will become the same as most of the rest of us out on the block. Let him post then and see what he has to say to all.

Looking at it from a business POV, I don't blame Delta for wanting to save every penny. They have a very expensive strike in the near future, combined with a slowing economy. They also are behind when it comes to ordering new planes.

Come on guys, Delta is not some hippy CO-OP- if the company makes good profits it should be able to use that money to increase it's cash position, buy new equipment, and expand its business without worrying about employees wanting to strike.

This attitude with you airline people (especially pilots) that not only are you entitled to a job, but in addition you are entitled to continuous raises, bonuses, whatever, is crap.

At least I'm not some middle-aged loser making $50 bonuses and complaining about my employer on the Internet like a baby!?!

As a 21 y/o Computer Science major, I've probably made more working as an intern programmer than you have in your petty little career! And when my umbilical cord is cut and I begin working full time next year, I'm sure I'll have better sense then to stay up an bitch about my job. And I'll make more $$ then you too.

Like I said in my last post and let me reiterate to you: come and talk to us later when you have your umbilical cord cut and you no longer have mommy to feed you and you are out on your own. Never in any of my posts did I complain about a $50.00 bonus. On the other hand it's good that you feel so confident about yourself and what you aspire to be. I can say the same for myself.

Only 8 employees with perfect attendance receive the Ford Explorer, that is correct-and many simply sell them afterwards and take cash. But EVERY employee with perfect attendance receives a prize of some sort. It could be a dinner at a local restaurant, gift certificates to restuarants or stores, but everyone who has perfect attendance wins something.

I saw someone mention above that CO hasn't received an on-time bonus for a while. Yeah, it's been a while-one month. In 2000, CO employees received 2 $100 checks for being #1 on-time, and 9 checks for $65 for being in the top three of airlines using ACARS. That's 11 checks. CO was also ranked #1 for the year in On-Time performance.

HOUSTON, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL - news) had the best on-time performance of any major U.S. carrier last year. According to newly-released figures from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Continental ended the year with a 78.1 percent on-time arrival rate -- 16.8 points higher than tenth-ranked United Airlines, and a full 5.5 percent higher than the industry average.

``We continue to distance ourselves from the rest of the pack,'' said Continental Chairman and CEO Gordon Bethune. ``Our employees work hard all year to keep our airline on top, and our customers notice and appreciate their efforts.''

In 2000, Continental gave on-time bonus checks to employees 11 out of 12 months, totaling $39 million. Since the program started, Continental has rewarded employees for on-time performance with $157 million in bonuses. When the airline places first among major U.S. carriers, every employee receives a bonus check for $100. When the airline places second or third, or finishes the month with an on-time percentage of 80 or higher, employees receive $65.

Last summer, when other airlines were plagued by weather and labor delays, Continental posted on-time numbers 6.2 points higher than the previous summer.

It is also worth noting that the Explorers only go to people not in a management position. Secondly, they give them out twice a year. That obviously makes 16 new $35,000 Fords a year.

AA and CO employees are getting cash bonuses. The bonuses are taxed at 43% unless they are rolled into their 401k's. I'm glad they are getting bonuses, because as a DL employee, they are starting to close the gap between what I earn as a DL employee. A freind of mine at CO has to fly an extra 3 day trip or 15 more hrs of flying to make what I make in 85 hours. All of my flying is on brand new widebody a/c, with layovers at premium hotels. My CO counterpart gets to fly the 737-800 transcon, or if he's lucky the 757. I won a sliver level prize from DL and expect to receive a stereo/cd player. My other choices were a DVD player, luggage, a GPS, or a Coach bag. I'm content with DL's salary and benefits. No company will have 100% satisfaction with salary and benefits.

Since when is income taxed at 43%? Last time I checked the maximum tax rate for federal in the US was 39%. That is if you are in the top tax bracket. If you live in Texas there is no state income tax. They are most likely paying about 33-35%.

CO employees make less money that is a fair statement. CO also gets more productivity out of each employee for working more trips per month. Is that fair, or course it is. Nobody forced your friend to join CO.

I hate to tell you this, I hope you are sitting down, Delta also has bought the 737-800's. Yes it is true. It is also true that CO has bought the 777 and 767, same as DL.

It gets better, CO also doesn't have to fly the L1011's, the 727's and 737-200's. They are old too.

Come on. Give yourself a little credit and don't post such rubbish

Sure, CO is still lagging behind a little in pay, but look at it in this light: In the 6 years since Gordon and Greg took over the reins of CO-January 1995 is when that happened, my salary with CO has jumped 60%. You have to remember how far CO employees were behind 6 years ago, thanks to the likes of Frankie, and how fast they've closed that gap with airlines like DL, AA and UA. 6 years ago, top-out pay for agents was $12 an hour, now it's $20. That's quite a big difference in a short period of time.

And I had to laugh when you talk about the fleet you fly and the fleet we fly. It's true, you have a lot more widebodies, and that's great, but we fly the youngest fleet in the country, and it keeps gettng younger. No 737-100's or -200's, no 727-200's, no DC-9-30's. Plus CO will start phasing out the not-to-old 737-500's when their leases come up in the near future, replacing them with 737-800's and -900's. You have a bigger fleet, you have more widebodies, but our fleet is, plane for plane ,as good as anyone's. Cheers.

Southwest has a low-paid bunch, but the stock options seem to make it worthwhile...

As Alpha1 stated, CO has begun the long climb to industry standard pay. In the short time that I've been with CO, my base pay has increased 15% and I find myself making commission bonuses (one dollar for every e-ticket and ticket by mail, and 50 cents for every flown booking) nearing $175 a month, then CO throws in an extra $110 if you are in the top 25% of sales or $250 if you are in the top 10% of sales (per Res center) every month. On top of that, we can usually expect a $65 or $100 check each month for on-time performance, as well as a profit-sharing check (4% of total gross earnings the previous year) on 14Feb. Combine that with attractive stock purchase programs, and an awesome 401K contributions match (up to $500 per year) and great healthcare options, it's hard to find much to complain about. Gordon and Greg have done an excellent job keeping employee morale way, way up. Every week, Gordon leaves his co-workers a voicemail telling us what a great job we've done and how proud of us he is. Although I've never met the man, I trust him, I value his comments and have great respect for the work that he has done.

Exusair is right. Who is 100% happy with their benefits and salary. I happen to be one of those people.

So stop all yer crying on how this is a slap in the face. And next time yer stuck in FLL and you have to be to work in a few hours and you just got on by the skin on yer teeth using yer A-1RB pass, then maybe you'll be thankful.
