Midsized Corporate Jets To Hawaii?

Wed Jan 31, 2001 11:20 am

A friend of mine is looking to buy a midsized corporate jet for his business. Currently he is considering the Citation Excel, the Learjet 60 and 45, and the older Citation VII and III's. The problem, however, is that he wants a plane that can take him safely nonstop to and from Hawaii from the west coast (2000+nm) as he doesnt' want to pay the money for a larger longer ranged jet (Citation X, Challenger, Falcon, Hawker, Gulfstream, etc...). I've read that the ranges on the first set of aircraft I've listed are about 2000nm. So what I'm trying to ask is are there any midsized or even smaller business jets that have the range to go safely from San Francisco to Honolulu? Can the Lear 60's or 45's or Citation VII/III/Excels do it? I'd appreciate any info on this problem. Thanks a lot.

Hey man, I am pretty sure that all of those will make it however, for safety never take it to the end. If it has a range of 2000nm and you have to make an approach or two, I would hate that feeling. Howver, you may want to look into a Astra. I dont know alot of specifics on them. I know they are very economical and have a pretty good range. Good luck!!!!!! Personally I would spend the extra and get a Gulfstream and go around the world. Good luck, write if you have any more questions

From Enthusiast Color Series, Executive Jets by Geza Szurovy:

Ranges (all with 45 min. reserve, which is precious little vs. headwinds)

Learjet 60: 2325 nm (nice cabin)
Learjet 45: 2200 nm (better cockpit than the 60 but smaller cabin)
Citation III: ? sorry, I couldn't find my Cessna Citation book.
Citation VII: 2220 nm (adequate)
Citation Excel: 2027 nm with 45 min. reserve (no way)
IAI Astra SPX: 3025 nm (excellent choice, but it has a narrow cabin)

http://www.aircraft.com/Default.asp has a cool database of used airplanes

There's a nice 1998 Astra SPX for sale there for $9.675 million.

His business operates to Hawaii....?  Big grin

BJS/Flexjet deploys it's Lear 60s quite regularly to Hawaii. Performancewise, it's well within operational limits.
My definition of cool ? Not trying so hard to be cool.

The trusty Westwind is a cheaper aircraft and is well capable of handling that range.

The Astra SP / SPX makes the Hawaii trip routinely with no problems it also easily does the west coast (Oregon) to London with one fuel stop. Watch out for older aircraft (Westwinds, etc.) the new RSVM requirements will "bite" you. The Astra SPX is a real rocket ship - we flight plan ours at 470 KTAS on a daily basis. Normal operational altitudes are FL410 & FL430. FL450 is a legitimate altitude on many flights. The cabin is somewhat smaller that the competition, but still very comfortable and it has all of the expected amenities. Long story short, the Astra has the most bang for the buck of any of the mid-sized jets. We've operated them (4 aircraft) for 13 years and they're very reliable. Our company (Part 91 operator) can afford any of these aircraft - we choose to operate the Astras. E-mail me directly if you have any questions. jetguy@cdsnet.net
