Anyone Know This Airline?

Wed Jan 31, 2001 11:47 pm

I took a picture of this Yak-42 in Kuala Lumpur - Lion Airlines. The plane is leased from Russia, and still has Russian registration, but I can't find any reference to Lion in the JP catalog. Anybody know where they come from, what kind of fleet they have.

I am going to take an educated guess here.

I think this may just be Lion Mentara Air of Indonesia.

I did hear they were going to operate 737-200s, but that they may have switched to Yak-42s.....this photo confirms what I have head; if in fact it is Lion Mentara Air.

Lion Airlines is a new Indonesian Airline. I think they operate both 737-200s and Yak-42s as I saw both types at CGK.

Cool... but I'm sure it wouldn't have been too hard to remove Russian flag from the forward of fuselage. Duh...  Smile

My experiences of flying on Yak-42: takes-off like a missile, straight upwards, almost. Nice... but very crammed seats, in fact, Yak-42s achieved least possible cabin space per pax, read it somewhere...

It is somewhat of a box. 6 pax per row, 20 rows, every single one that I've seen.

I hate the thing. Ugly as hell, and the early versions had a nasty habit of shedding its tailplane in midair. I had a smoke-in-cabin experience in a Yak-42 about 7 or 8 years ago, which caused us to make an emergency landing in Lipetsk.

As far as Russian/Soviet Tri-jets go, I prefer the Tu-154. It's older, and I've ridden in a couple that sounded like they would fly apart at any moment at takeoff, but it flies like a fighter and is probably the most beautiful airliner I know, other than Concorde (I love the bird-of-prey position of the wings when you watch one land.)
