What Is 'ETOP'?

Can anyone explain what's 'ETOP'?

Do a search. But briefly, it has to do with flying a twin engined airplane long distances away from suitable airports to land at in the event of an emergency. This usually means out over the ocean, but doesn't have to.

ETOPS is an acronym for Extended-Range Twin-Engine Operations. Without an ETOPS rating, an aircraft with only two engines must be able to get to an airport where it can safely land within 60 minutes if an engine fails in-flight. ETOPS extends this "rule time" to 90 minutes or more, up to a maximum of 180 minutes. Obtaining an ETOPS rating requires certification of the reliability of an airframe/engine combination as well as an airline's flight operations and maintenance. Usually extra equipment is required as well, such as additional backup systems for electrical power.

There has been some discussion about extending ETOPS rules to allow a 207/240 Minutes Etops. The main problem would be in case of inflight cabin fire (SR111 is a good example) or medical emergency. A 3 hours flight for diversion airport is an awfully long time!

OO-AAG,

I don't understand how a medical emergency is going to be affected by the number of engines on the airplane. Three hours is three hours when somebody is having a heart attack, whether they are on board a 747 or a 777.

Same goes with an inflight cabin fire - the number of engines doesn't seem to affect the effects of a cabin fire. An engine fire, yes, but not someting like what happened to Swissair.

The whole reason for ETOPS is specifically for engine related problems. The fire on SR111 or any medical emergency has no effect on the ETOPS rating of the aircraft. The whole idea behind ETOPS is to ensure that a twin engined jet will have enough power to get to an airport a certain distance away if one of the engines dies.

Extended Twin Operations. AKA, Engines turn or people swim. Operators want 180 ETOPS approval but have to prove to the FAA a high level of engine reliability. Don't assume it's just 180 minute no way-point trips over water. It simply means you have no airport that can accomodate you within 180 minutes. If you lose 180 ETOPS, the next level down is 120. Then you have to fly further up north and waste more fuel (to get to Europe for example).
