Near Miss Over Tokyo

Thu Feb 01, 2001 11:10 pm

As reported by AFP:

Atleast 34 people were injured when two Japan Airlines aircraft carrying a total of almost 700 people came with in moments of colliding.

Those hurt were on a 747-400 carrying 427 people which took emergency action and dived to avoid the other craft.Passengers interviewed on television reported seeing people crash through the roof of the cabin, such was the speed of descent.

Itwas not immediately known how close the aircraft came to colliding.

The apparent near disaster occurred 150 kms west of Tokyo when the 747-400 was heading to the southern island of Okinawa after taking off from Haneda airport with 411 passengers and 16 crew onboard.

The other aircraft was a DC-10 which was arriving at Narita airport from Pusan in South Korea and carrying 237 passengers and 13 crew.
.....up there with the best!

If these 2 aircraft had collided, it would have been the worst disaster in aviation history. I think that this encounter should be a wake up call to the big bosses out there to make some changes and make them soon. The space in the sky is not endless and it is only going to get worse!

Was that a problem with the ATC?....Or plainly because the pilots weren't aware they were so close together!~

I might be mistaken, but isn't there some kind of early avoidance system on at least the 747 that tells the crew when they are within 5 miles of a collision? It seems hard to believe that this type of thing still happens today with all of the technology that we have to prevent it from happening.

It was apparently ATC error. There was confusion with ATC trainee and new employee over flight number. Just go over to and get better detail.
