United And Other 747's At LAX

Sat Feb 03, 2001 3:33 pm

Hey! If I am at LAX and see a United 744 landing or taking off, where can I guess it is going to/coming from?

Also, the same question for other airlines if anyone can answer that.

Does Korean Air necessarily going to Seoul? Japan Air to Tokyo? Etc.....

Basically, if anyone can tell me what 747's are coming from or going to, that would be great. Whatever airlines you can think of is fine!

You can guess that the United 747 will be going to either NRT, HKG, SYD, AKL/MEL, DEN, or ORD.

I flew out of LAX in July on Qantas to Sydney. Most of the flights at the international terminal were flying to Asian destinations. Singapore, Korean, JAL, ANA, Qantas, Air NZ, Asiana, and other airlines all fly 747s to and from Asia to Los Angeles. Air France, Lufhtansa, British Airways, KlM, and several other European airlines fly 747s to Europe. If you see a 747 at Los Angeles, however, there's a 2-1 chance that it's flying to the Pacific over Europe.

If you see AirNZ 744 in at Los angeles you can bet it came from AKL/APW/RAR/PPT/SYD.

They usually then go on to LHR/FRA/NAN/APW/RAR/AKL/SYD.

Cheers

All AirNZ flights operate to the Pacific or non-stop to Auckland Australia. None to Asia, those flights are codeshared with SQ,TG.

KE also fly to Sao poulu from Losangeles. So if you see KE then most probably going to SEL/NRT/Sao poulu (Spelling??)

Air NZ no longer flies from Apia,Papeete,or Rarotonga using 747's these were back in the good old days and were operated by 742's they now use 763's. They do use 744's on Nadi LAX services twice a week though orginating in AKL and continuing to Frankfurt. As of the end of March Frankfurt will be discontinued. They fly daily from SYD and LHR and ten non stops a week from AKL. LHR flights orginate at AKL going via LAX.

China Airlines operates 2x daily to TPE using 744 all pax
EVA Airways operates 2x daily to TPE using 744 all pax and sometimes 744 combi
EVA airways use to operate 744 combi 2x weekly to PTY but was discontinued due to heavy losses
Thai Airways uses 744 to NRT/BKK 4x weekly and to KIX/BKK 3x weekly making it daily to BKK
Singapore Airlines uses 744 to TPE/SIN daily and to NRT/SIN daily making it 2x daily to SIN
I'm not sure whether Philippines Airlines still operate 744s to Manila (can anyone tell me?)??

I believe that UAL operate 747-422's from LAX-DEN about 3 times daily... I also know that UAL operate 747-200's into DEN BUT I think these flights are all from SFO... not sure - can anybody say for sure???

This doesn't sound like it will help you much -438... Sad

Phillipine Airlines switches off 340 and 747 throughout the week. I think more days of the week it goes 340 though. Stops in Honolulu. Malaysia has a LAX-NRT-KUL flight. Asiana has a daily flight so Seoul. JAL also has flights to Nagoya upon 747s. Northwest flies 747s to Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya from LA, all on 747s. They also fly many cargo 747s around the world into LA. British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Virgin, KLM, and sometimes El Al fly 747s from the Europe Region.
I think everyone else nailed all of the other routes.
BTW I think that Northwest flies from either Detroit or Minneapolis (or both) to Honolulu with 747s. So there are some 747 flight to the mainland from HI.

You might want to know that despite the fact PR's fleet of 747-400's and A340-300E's can fly LAX/SFO to MNL non-stop, they usually stop over at HNL because of the fact that Hawaii has a very large ex-patriate Filipino population (they went to Hawaii to work the sugar cane and pineapple fields early in the 20th Century).  Smile

Northwest does not fly 747s from Los Angeles to Nagoya. The only city they serve from Nagoya is Detroit.

Ray--

Having stopped over in HNL on one of those transpac PR flights in December, I assure you that it is merely an operational stopover and *not* a layover. Turnaround time is supposed to be 30-45 min., and no one is allowed to get off the plane during this time. There are separate PR flight(s) to HNL. Also, 744s do not make the stopover... only A343s do. "The Reason is Simple": =P the A343 claims to have the range, but strong headwinds, in conjunction with heavy loads in the cargo hold, during the winter months detract from the Airbus's capability.

yeah, correct.
same applies to lufthansa services from FRA to GIG and GRU, as far as what i´ve heard. actually the a-340 has the better range but with the full load the 744 performs better!

Also, sometimes if the weather is bad at SFO and they have to cancel several SFO-LAX UA shuttle flights, they will fly a 744 between SFO and LAX to make up for it!

Northwest uses 742's on flight between LAX-NRT and LAX-KIX. The LAX-NRT flight will change to a 744 when the new planes arrive. Also the MSP-HNL flight is usually a 742 but sometimes a 744 when they need the capacity. On my band trip the return was a 744.

Many Asian airlines fly 744s to LAX but not necessarily from their home countries. For example:

KE flies to SEL, as well as GRU and NRT
MAS flies to KUL, as well as TPE and NRT.
SQ flies to SIN, as well as TPE, NRT.
Thai flies to BKK, as well as NRT.

Etc.

Asiana has 2 flights to Seoul.
Korean Air has 1 flight to NRT / 4 SEL, ussually in a daily basis. They also fly in and out of Sau Paulo on Monday, wednesday, and friday. United also has a lot of flights during the morning time in the morning. Singapore also has a flight to LAX-NRT-SIN in morning, and LAX-TPE-SIN at night.

The Air France 744 I flew from LAX to CDG came from Papeete. I,m not sure (but almost) that it'll land in LA on it's way from Paris to Papeete too.

I am not totally sure but I believe that El Al flies 747s from LAX to a stopover in JFK, and then onto Tel-Aviv.
