El Al To Order More 747s & 777s?!?!

Sun Feb 04, 2001 12:05 am

It was stated in a recent FI press release on El Al that they are currently investigating ordering more 747s and 777s. Does anyone have the article or more information?

I didn't read the article but I know that El Al has 3 747-200 convertibles that are getting old and will be the next on El Al's replacement list, probably by the 747-400 convertible.

El Al was also planning to buy some A330-200's.

Any order for any a/c will not take place this year as the airline's results are not getting any better because of the MidEast crisis and the high fuel costs.

The fleet plan for 2001 is:

1. phashing out of more 742 as more 772 are in service, at the moment only 6 742 left: 2 747F, 2 747C, 2 747B
the plan is a retirement of 1-2 more 747 classic.

2. retire of the first 762 or the second 757 ( 1 757 had already retired last January.).

El Al 001

El Al 001, in your post you mentioned that El Al has retired one of it's 752's, why did they do that? (the 752 couldn't be more than 17 years old) Does the a/c flies for a different airline now? Did El Al replaced it or planning to replace it with a different a/c?

Thanks,
LY744.

Won't the US prohibit EL AL from ordering any Airbus aircraft? I think they will go with Boeing for all of their aircraft. What the chances of EL AL going for the 747-400LR?

That would be great! They could do TLV-LAX with that. Love the new LY color scheme.

LY had entertained Airbus proposals for a small fleet of A330s and even filed a mixed order for 777 and A330, but the A330s were held up for political reasons and likely won't ever be delivered.

Some of El Al aircraft are getting quite old so more orders of new aircraft won't be a surprise.

As El Al has been a loyal Boeing client, more 747 and 777 are likely.

Well the plans are in. Considering the violence doesn't escalate any further (with Sharon i dont know how thats gonna work)... I will be traveling to Israel this summer. After going to LAX, I will be on El Al 106 LAX-TLV. They haven't told us yet, but I suppose on the way back I'll fly through JFK (headwinds cause shorter maximum range) to LAX, and then connect on to SFO. Should be interesting. Does anyone know how long the LAX-TLV flight is (as in hours)?

Hello everyone!

LY744, El Al did retire one of it's 757-258, 4X-EBL, MSN/23917, the aircraft left El Al's fleet last December and was sold to Boeing.
The retirement of the 14 years old 757 was in no connection to the MidEast crisis, it was due to the fact that there was no need for this a/c since the airline added 5 new 737s to the fleet.

TWAneedsnohelp, Both the current 744 and 772 can make TLV-LAX-TLV, infact, the airline did operate in the summer of 96' a TLV-LAX flight nonstop, the problem in this case is the DEMEND not the DISTANCE.

and last one, SJC>SFO, El Al's 106 takes 13 hours, while its scheduled as 13.55.
