Atr 42/72 Icing Problems

Since the accident at roselawn .........Has there been any more problems with these aircraft due to the icing....or have the wing boots been redesigned?........every time i see a program to do with turbo props these planes get severely black marked.....

the simple fact of the mater is that aircraft are never designed to actually remain in icing conditions but for transetting though icing levels. The past cases with problems in the atr normally resulted from the aircraft remaining in icing conditions for a period of time , which no aircraft is ever designed to do.

Maybe, but I heard that FAA had asked for all US operators of the ATR to change the system of the deice boots on the ATR. Now I haven't gotten this from the FAA website so I don't know for sure, but I thought there were some modifications.
Also as a Dash8 fan I still have to get my biased 2 cents in....LOL. Truth of the matter is that Dash8's have been performing longer than ATR's and in much harsher climates without any problem. Now I don't know if the Dash8 were extremely lucky, or it just wasn't the Eagle flight crew's day. Only that in all this time this never happened to a Dash8.
Remember this is somewhat biased, so don't go take it too much to seriously.....LOL.

The FAA prohibited the flight of ATR aircraft in icing conditions after that crash. They ran a series of icing tanker test and found that large drops of super cooled water would freeze aft of the deicing boots. Of course there are no boots there so the aircraft can't deice there. After those tests the FAA ordered all ATR's in the US to be equipted with new deicing boots that ran further after where the buildups where happening. The also made some modifications to the 121 and 135 rules regarding flight in icing on aircraft with pnumatic de-icing boots. This effects most commuters not just the ATR.

The amazing part of this is that the NTSB and FAA ran an extensive series of both labatory and flight testing, which generated a lot of information about large ice drops that wasn't known before......The French government which own a big chunk of ATR wrote the crash up to pilot error!!!

Likewise I don't know who many other contries order the boots on the ATR changed so travel outside the US on an ATR at your own risk.

I don't think it is fair to compare the ATR to the Dash-8 as far as iceing conditions. The Dash-8 is a CANADIAN airplane for petes sake!!! :-) There is a birthright there, after all Dehavilland Canada is owned by Bombadier and their build snowmachines and those tractors they groom ski areas with!!! I would hope they know something about ice:-)

I am just saying this in good fun. But comparing the experience that Bombadier has dealing with winter to ATR just isn't fair. It's like trying to deciding of if you are going to use the local ice cream truck or a Mecedes Benz Unimog for a off road truck rally. If the locka ice cream truck is a Unimog then you live is a really rough neighbourhood.:-)

I flew on a Markair D-8-300 once and we started picking up ice in some clouds. I got a good look at both it forming and the effectivness of the DHC boots. It is kind of interesting watching de-ice boots work. Rumer has it too that one of the reasons that Horizon got rid of their 328's was that the pilots where not thrilled about that aircraft handling in icy weather. They may have gotten spoiled on the Dash-8....:)

I would bet the Canadians would know a thing or two about icing....hehe.

Just wanted to add one final comment. You know, Horizon has made a very extensive study an all commuter airliners, including the jets and found that the Dash 8 had the lowest seat per mile costs than any other. Including general economy, maintennance, comfort etc, etc.
I hope to get my hand on that report one of these days.
Now other companies are using Horizon's study to change their fleet to a Dash8
commuter fleet.
