Southwest - No New Cities In 2001

Tue Feb 06, 2001 1:32 pm

Hi,

Uncle Herb announced today at the Air Carrier Conference in Miami that there is a strong possibility that Southwest would not open any new cities in 2001. Instead, they are considering focusing new capacity from the new 73Gs coming on line from Boeing to increasing frequencies in certain markets.

If they do add new cities to their mix, any guesses as to which ones?

Rgds,
Joe

A time-honored topic in this forum, but here are my picks in the proper priority:
1) ICT-Wichita, Kansas
2) MKE-Milwaukee, Wisconsin
3) CLT-Charlotte, NC or CHS-Charleston, SC
4) opposite of #3
5) COS-Colorado Springs, Colorado

What's West Palm Beach?

I think most of the ripe markets have been picked already. If they're not in Cincinnati, they should be. That leaves Memphis and Minneapolis-St. Paul...

I think what this means is that it is a wait and see game. It is quite likely they are waiting to see what happens with the situation in STL regarding TWA/AA. Im sure there has been a game plan drawen up to cover almost any eventuality there. I have a strong feeling that the additional capacity will primarily be used in STL perhaps BWI too if the UA/US merger goes through. On the other hand it might be Herbs way of catching the other airlines off guard and new cities will indeed be added in 2001.

I'd like to see WN offer additional service out of KALB to STL, BNA, Midway, maybe FLL. Currently non-stops are BWI (x7), MCO (x2), LAS (x1) with thru service to LAX. Bring on more 737-7H4s.

What about Ft. Myers, FL, Great airport, very modern, and is going to have another terminal built soon. Since they already have lots of intra-FL routes, why dont they add it, NS from MDW or a direct through someplace?

I would like to see the following cities:

GRR
DSM
ICT
TYS

All of these cities are underserved, and have extremly high-fares due to lack of competition. Plus, each has a suitable MSA population to support SWA.

However, I would not expect to see any of these cities on the route map for quite some time, mainly due to geographical bias.
