I guess you could include most routes where the airlines operate an hourly service, so you might include LGA-ORD. And I think BOS-PHL is hourly too.

Significant traffic on ORD to DFW and LAX. You might add ATL to florida vacation spots.

Detroit to Chicago

Northwest flies from DTW to ORD hourly, also Northwest flies to Midway from Detroit several times a day.
Southwest flies between DTW and Midway hourly
AA flies between DTW and ORD several times a day
United flies between DTW and ORD almost hourly, at least 10 times a day.
Pro Air when it was flying and when it starts back up will has flown and will fly to Midway from DET (Detroit City Airport), unknown how frequent
I'm not sure but I think Spirit flies or used to fly between DTW and Midway also

ATL-MIA, MCO, TPA. Delta operates those flights with 767-300s at times, so they have to get alot of traffic. How else could you fill a 250 seater wide body on a route that barely clocks in at 1 hour at the longest?

Ah, you are forgetting the Pacific Northwest corridor. There are flights on the .5 hour SEA-PDX, and SEA-YVR. Also, the SEA-SFO (or bay area) is VERY busy, with AS, AA, UA, and SW flying to SFO, OAK, and SJC. These flights depart on the hour for United alone! Once AA took over Reno Air's routes to SJC, there are a lot more AA MD-80s at SEA!

AA/CO/DL/American Eagle/SW operate Dallas-Houston, there is atleast 1 flight every half hour. Isn't NY-BOS pretty busy??

Come on guys, how can anyone not mention Miami-New York City? The only thing here is that it's between two Miami airports and three New York City airports. I read in the Herald over 4,500,000 people fly between the two cities every year. Nearly 40% of Miami's non-hispanic population is from or has family from New York City.

Profitability wise, I'd have to say NYC-BOS. With no low-fare carrier in the mix, and a both being extremely healthy buisness markets, NYC-BOS fares are quite high.

Frequency and capacity are two different things. In terms of capacity, the top 3 are:

New York (all 3) - LAX
New York (all 3) - SFO
New York (all 3) - MCO

I don't have the exact numbers for the first two, but NYC - MCO carries 6712 passengers a day.

Source is Airliner World Mag, July 2000 (not that I am suggesting that this mag is be-all and end-all, but it's more official than speculation).

Of course, there is more frequency on other routes.
buhh bye

Come on, how about ATL-MCO, I think Delta has 17 flights a day, with extra sections on the weekends, and these aren't 737 or 727 flights, the great majority are widebodies, 767 777, an occasional tristar and the mighty MD-11.And don't forget MCO-BOS, don't know exactly how many daily flights a day, but I'd guess Delta has at least a dozen.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation for the 2nd quarter of 2000 (most recent data they have on the WWW), the 20 most heavily-travelled routes are:

Los Angeles-New York (7770 passengers daily)
Chicago-New York (7766)
Boston-New York (7390)
Fort Lauderdale-New York (7368)
Atlanta-New York (7288)
Orlando-New York (6985)
Washington, D.C-New York (6761)
San Francisco-New York (6202)
Dallas-Houston (5882)
Las Vegas-Los Angeles (5142)
Los Angeles-Oakland (4407)
Miami-New York (4345)
Los Angeles-San Francisco (4307)
Las Vegas-New York (4253)
West Palm Beach-New York (4109)
Atlanta-Chicago (4094)
Boston-Washington, DC (4075)
Chicago-Los Angeles (3913)
Atlanta-Washington, DC (3896)
Chicago-Detroit (3847)

Clearly the numbers are a bit different if you combine multiple area airports that DOT counts separately (i.e. LA=LAX+ONT+BUR+SNA+LGB; South Florida=MIA+FLL+PBI; SF=SFO+OAK+SJC; etc.)

But it gives you a good picture.

As Usual...

...the DOT web data left out Hawaii. HNL-OGG might be the busiest airport-pair in the country, and should be well up in that DOT list, even though most of the rest of them are multiple airport-pairs.
