Continental's 744 Option?

I heard from a yahoo club on IAH that continental has the option of converting
some of their 777s into 747-400s. Apparently there are some distant rumors according to which CO could possibly purchase a couple of jumbos if the loads on their NRT flights continue to be as good as they are now from IAH and EWR. Has anyone else heard of this?

It does make sense in one way as it would be almost impossibe to get more gate space to add extra flights on these routes, but on the other hand would the increase in maintenance costs warrant this? There is also the speculation that if they get the 747 they might just let NW do the maintenance on it under their newly found friendship!

The chances of CO getting additional flights are all but non-existant for a reason that has nothing to do with gate space... The current bilateral agreement between the US and Japan is very restrictive unless you are talking about UA/NW/JAL/ANA. To get governmental approval for any extra flights they would need another airline to drop service.

I asked a question similar to this one a while ago. It makes perfect sense to switch from a 777 to a 747 if the passenger loads increase on this route. If they do hold options on the 744 and the NRT traffic is good (Which it has been) I wouldn't be surprised to see 5-10 747-400s in CO's livery soon.

With what Purdue said it seems that the only logical choice would be to operate the 747-400 or maybe the newer versions 400X and 400Y.

But what about operating & maintenance costs - will profits be high enough
to warrant this. Right now they have two routes which means a requirement
of just 4 planes ...

Still---even with the proposed 747-400's...the maintainence/operating costs wouldn't be THAT much higher than the 777. Keep in mind that the -400 is an EXTREMELY fuel-efficient aircraft. The only crew costs would be about three extra FA's, and maybe one pilot (if the 777 has 3). However, these costs would be lowered a little bit by the extra time saved with the higher speed of the 747.

I think all airlines flying into the busiest Japanese airports should use 747-400s where possible. Certainly all flights to the US. I know several japanese who are of the opinion that it is not moral to have so many 777 or md11 flights when, such capacity restrictions are cripplying the airports slot wise. They feel that capacity should be used over frequency. I know that passengers prefer daily flights, but, i can understand the mentaility. some even believe the japanese governement should go one step futher and inisit on the use of the 747 on the route. Personally, i can't tell you then answer, but, i would like to see continental buy 744s. I think it would look great in their livery.

I can almost guarantee that you will never see a CO 744, unless CO were to buy NW (!). It is true that CO may need a slightly larger aircraft in the future for the Pacific, but the 777-300 is a much more viable (and cost effecient) alternative.

I don't think that the 777-300 is a more viable alternative. It doesn't have the range or the capacity that the 747-400 has. CO used to operate the 747-200 in small numbers so why not the 400?
