Hometown Airlines

Fri Feb 09, 2001 6:21 am

Has anybody ever noticed that most airlines are disliked in their hometowns? For example: NW in DTW and MSP, UA in ORD and DEN, HP in PHX, CO in EWR and IAH. All the local customers and media usually have derogatory things to say about them. A prime example is HP actually had better ontime into PHX the last few months than WN, but the public hates them even though they are improving as of late. Without HP fares out of PHX would be very high. Does anybody have a prob with WN? Their ontime performance in the last quarter slipped, but still you never hear anybody say a bad word about them. Maybe its the fact that you don't expect a lot when you fly seat assignment or food to screw up. I hear a lot about UA, NW, CO are not the greatest...maybe people just expect more when flying them. Sorry for rambling. Have a great day

HA HA.. I dont know what your talking about. If these airlines were to leave their "hometown", I am sure people would be quite upset. Just look at what happened when that airline with the ugliest "paint scheme" was talking about taking NWA over, people in MSP and DTW were having a fit.
There is no evidence behind this statement.

The reason everybody hates HP is they have horrible aircraft and maintenence (US news had a brutal article a few months back), they have a horrible on time record and their fares really aren't any better than a major airline. The reason fares out of phx are cheap is because of WN not HP.
As far as people in DEN hating UA, well thats what they deserve with the fares they charge. My favorite UA joke is telling the travel agent "I don't want to buy the plane, i just want to ride in it." Outside of the pricing issue, i have never had much of a problem with UA.

Many people may feel that their hometown airline is a monopoly. Some routes may not have any competition against their hometown airline.

The reason that Northwest was hated so much in Detroit started with the blizzard of 1999 and how poorly NW handled it keeping people trapped in planes for 8 hours, rude crew members. Just recently DTW's other hometown airline Spirit was taking a lot of heat over delays. After such incidents people tend to forget a while later and soon everyone is flying their hometown airlines again.

I never hear anything bad about CO in Houston...or NYC for that matter.
