Last Minute Stand By - Cheap Ticket?

Mon Feb 12, 2001 1:26 am

Can you just show up to the airport and hope for an available seat in order to get a cheap fare? I know that some people used to do this just for the fun of flying somewhere with little money. Just wondering if it can still be done.

You would think that the airlines would want to sell unsold seats on a flight that's about to leave. After all, $50 for a seat is better than no revenue at all if it goes empty. But, it seems that it never works that way. I suppose that airlines are afraid that leisure travellers would stop booking in advance for higher fares if the flexible traveller thought they could get a dirt cheap fare minutes before boarding. It may cost money in the long run.

Well not in the UK. Last year my brother had to fly home at the last minute, the night before his father died. Gill Airways (who im glad to say are on the verge of bankruptcy!) charged him £123 for one way 30 minute flight from Belfast to Newcastle. A disgrace saying that BA who now also flythe route have same day fares for only £49 return!!

Not in the US...those seats are reserved for business travellers who HAVE to get home. I paid about $800 for a one way tix EWR-SNA on America West....nothing less than the WORST airline in the US.

I thought as much. I know that you USED to be able to. That was back in the good old days of aviation. Flying these days sucks. Too many pax, crowded airports, and people with holes in their pants flying.

Oh well.
