Airport And Airline With Most Home Gates

Mon Feb 12, 2001 9:59 am

What combination of airport and airline have the most gates in one place? Obviously this would be a hub for a major carrier but who and where is it? American at DFW? United at ORD? or is it one of the major flag carrriers at home port?  Innocent

My bet would be Delta in Atlanta.

Northwest will have 97 gates in the new DTW terminal...I am pretty sure that rivals DL a ATL for the most gates.

Well, counting all of their connection carriers, I would have to say DL @ ATL. They take up about 5 of the 6 terminals in ATL, and each terminal has about 30 gates! So, that would easily beat NW's "mere" 97.

DL has more than 97 gates at ATL...I'd say it's a sure bet that they have the most.

Somehow I doubt that Delta has five of the six terminals at Atlanta. Where does AirTran park? Isn't one terminal just used for International? Also I thought Atlanta had only five terminals or did they recently add another?

I'm sorry, I wasn't meaning to be rude.

In respondse to Hlywd, there are six terminals if you count the T gates as a terminal. Airtran and others park in the one terminal that DL does not have a presence in. I guess that DL doesn't occupy all the gates of the 5 terminals it has a presence in, but I would say more than 90% of them.

Sorry for my mistakes,

Matt

Here is the best gate breakdown for Delta in ATL that I can come up with...I hope it's right but things do change often at ATL:

T-Concourse: 8 gates
A-Concourse: 34 gates
B-Concourse: 36 gates
D-Concourse: 10 gates
E-Concourse: 22 gates
Total 110 gates

ASA (DL Connection Carrier) has 16 gates in the C-Concourse. Combine the two and you get a grand total of 126 gates for DL.

Note that no airline officially owns the gates in International Concourse E.....however because of DL being the home airline and having the most int'l flights, DL has preferential use of 22 gates.

Currently, there are a total of 167 gates at ATL....although four more are currently being added onto Concourse E.

American uses gates T9, T10 and T11.
United uses gates T12, T13 and T14.
Airtran uses gates C1-C20.

The remaining gates in Concourse D are used by CO, NW, US, TW, Vanguard, Frontier, Midwest Express, Midway and a few others. I can't remember the exact gate numbers for all of these.

The remaining gates in Concourse E are used by Air France, British Airways, KLM, Swissair, Lufthansa, Air Jamaica, Aeromexico, LAPA, Korean, South African Airways and some charters as well.

Actually, one correction.....there are a total of 182 gates at ATL I think???? The numbering of Concourse D is throwing me off because the concourse is numbered oddly and skips some numbers. I'll have to check it out next month when I fly through ATL again.

Don't leave out CO at IAH. They may not be as big as Delta's presence at ATL, but I know they occupy 3 of the 4 terminals at IAH(B,C, and D). B is heavily CO Express, but also served by America West and NW, C is entirely CO, and D is practically all CO too. Just figured I would mention it.

according to http://www.munich-airport.de  Big thumbs up
, MUC's new T2 will have 114 Gates. LH won't own the gates, but they'll co-operate and co-own the whole terminal. I just can't wait for March 2003 when they open it. Other european airports: can't say that, the airlines do not own the gates, they rent them.

Isn't the 97 gates at Detroit's new Midfield terminal just for Northwest only? The terminal is going to be over a mile long (would that make it the largest individual terminal in the U.S.?)

First of all where will the International carriers go? I understand KLM would most likely be with Northwest but what about the others not in the Wings Alliance. I saw a artists impression with a British Airways 747 at the new terminal.

Also to the west of the terminal is a seperate commuter terminal where Mesaba and Express 1 will park. So how many gates does that account for total?

Also I have a feeling that Northwest will still occupy part of the Davey Terminal at Detroit after the move to the new building.

The new terminal is for NW/KL/CO only.

I think there are 97 gates for NW planes then add the gates for mesaba/express 1 and you probably get about 115. I'm not sure, but that would be my best guess.

What about Tokyo's domestic airport Haneda?

I have read in a few articles, from I belive the Detroit News awhile back saying that nternational carriers with scheduled flights i.e. British Airways, Lufthansa, and KLM will operate out of the new terminal.

I figured NW would try to keep them in the old facilities for a competetive advantage (except KLM ofcourse)

Any chance an Asian carrier may start serving DTW after the new terminal's completed? It seems like NW is the only link to Asia. Why not some carriers from Japan?

I agree with your logic here. (This next part is my opinion, but it's possible this is a factor in the decision to have all international airlines with regularly scheduled flights operate out of the new terminal.) However, Wayne County is going to have a say in who operates in the terminal, since they operate the airport. As a result, they are going to try to minimize costs. One way to do that is to place all the customs area in one location. If British Airways and Lufthansa operate in the Berry Terminal, that means the airport needs two customs facilities. The number of flights flown by those two airlines probably does not justify running two customs facilities.

I see what you are saying...why operate two customs facilities?

I know Sun Country and ATA also have intl flights and I highly doubt NW and Sun Country will EVER share a terminal!!!!!

LOL! Oh come on...didn't you hear, Northwest is giving Sun Country over half its gates at MSP? not to mention stop flying all routes on which it competes with Sun Country?  Nuts
