What caused the MD-90 not to be a popular plane? The MD-80 was great. What caused the MD-90's demise?

I'm not an expert but I think it may have came out a little too late. I would think that McDonnel Douglas's financial troubles may have killed it. I think if it would have came out in the 1980s it would have been more popular than the MD-80 series.

People apparently found the 737s and A320s more attractive is another guess.

Well, MD was very rushed in producing the aircraft, so it is partly the airlines' fault that they aren't happy. Another problem was that when MD made the fuselage longer, they didn't do much, if anything to the wings, which means it doesn't have impressive performance. I guess they also break down a lot.

So will airlines begin replacing them soon, like they have the MD-11s? Saudi Arabian Airlines may be amongst the first to do so Smile

SV got screwed by the US Gov't when it came to reequipping the airline. The MD90 order was part of the Airbus vs US + Gulf War formula that also left KU with 1 747-400, a few A310s, 777s, 4 A340s, 2 767s etc.

Apparently the software on the MD90 is so useless the aircraft has had to be stopped on the taxiway and shutdown and 'rebooted', just like with your PC. McDD executives from the 'final days' should offer refunds for producing a line of completely unuseable aircraft, and apologise for besmirching the name of a once-great company.

(As you can see I am in quite a belligerent mood due to having a horrendous cold for the second week running.)

Not only Saudi, but AA has made it clear that the -90s are on their way out soon...
