Super Jumbo?

Boeing unvieled its super jumbo project last week. Aviation & Space Technology Weekly reported on it. It has a one level fuselage that is made up of two joined 777 fuselages. The engines are of 777 type thrust. Does anyone know more about this project?

I did hear that Boeing was going to do a jet like that, called the MD-12. However I heard they stopped and they must of picked it up again or it was a rumour they dropped it.

I saw the rendering in AW&ST. It looked great and I thought how clever it was to go wider instead of taller. Think of the massive cargo capability of the double wide lower belly as well as the massive floor area of the main deck. You could theoretically open only one or two cargo doors on one deck to load or unload all cargo instead of 2 floors as on the A3XX (not counting the belly in both cases). Peter Sutch of Cathay Pacific however states the need for an A3XX type of super jumbo is needed much less now than a few years ago. He feels it will be awhile (a few years) before anyone really needs the super jumbo.

As you are talking about the A3XX, Airbus has a new study about this project. It was revealed just a few days ago and it's available at Airbus website.
You can see 27 pages of interesting details either you like Airbus or Boeing aircrafts.

honestly... you may be discussing this Boeing soupyjumbo or whatever... but some replys were addressing the A3XX.. and Mirage was completely right to add some info about it. Just don't shoot people down with those one-liners.. it's rude.

When I first saw the preliminary drawing of this aircraft in AW&ST, I missed the dual-deck design. I must say, however, that the "wider is better" concept is growing on me. That airplane would be awesome. At the same time, it does seem too big for today's markets. Maybe the apparently huge cargo capacity could compensate for empty seats somewhat.

A couple of questions came up in my mind. First, how many aisles would this thing have? Any more than three would certainly be unnecessary.

Also, they mentioned "five main landing gear posts." This seems to be at least one more than necessary, although I'm not an engineer. I can understand an aircraft of that size needing a four-wheel truck on the nosegear--as a passenger, I would like to have some extra wheels up there in particular.

When is Boeing finally going to make up their mind about this Super Jumbo ?! To build or not to build, that seems to be the question. They come out with a project, then cancell it again, then another project....aaagh! Do as Nike says...Just do it! We'd all like to see it. Also it would be boring if there wasn't any competition for the A-3XX. Think of all those nice discussions on this site that we would loose out on.

I haven't seen the article that CX was refering to I have to admit. But I'm not sure wider is the way to go. A wide fuselage tends to create more drag than a narrow longer one (at least according to Boeing when they promote their 767 against the Airbus widebodies, and their 737 against the Airbus narrowbodies).

I'm also wondering about emergency evacuation. With a wider cabin, and perhaps more than two isles that could be more problematic.

I am certainly no engineer and if Boeing thinks that it is feasable, who am I to disagree. Good luck to them, I quite like some new ideas in aviation every now and

It is unlikely Boeing will make a super widebody jet until Asian economic crisis dies down, and Airbus's A3xx looks quite doubtful.
