Is Virgin Still Looking For Some B 747-200s?

Tue Feb 13, 2001 12:54 pm

As you all know, Virgin has already ordered 5 B 747-400s from Boeing.

However, from what I have read some time ago, after the new orders have been placed, Virgin Atlantic is still looking for a few B 747-200s.

How come? Does anyone know anything about this?

From my point of view, I think they already have enough B 747s, provided that they have just ordered 5 from Boeing. They don't need any for the time being.

I find it doubtful since they are a launch customer for the A340-600...which is intended to replace the -200s.

I find it strange that you are a big supporter of growth at British Airways, whilst pleading for modesty at Virgin Atlantic, notably an airline whose network offers still plenty of opportunity to further expansion.

Traditional strongholders in British Aiways' network, such as BOM, SIN, SYD, MEL or LOS, to name just a few, are currently not served by Virgin Atlantic, whilst others, like CPT or ORD, could do with some extra services.

Virgin Atlantic have 7 B744s on order, not 5.
They ordered 2 themselves and then decided to buy the 5 that Alitalia cancelled inorder to buy the B777.

United Airline, what are you, Branson's fleet manager? What makes you think they have "enough" 742s? This is one of the oddest posts I've seen in ages, at least since the one where someone said that SR111 came down because Swissair pilots take their shoes off during flight and put their feet up on airconditioning vents and fluff from dirty socks caused the fire (I kid you not - it's probably in the archive somewhere).

So can anyone tell me whether or not, are they going to get more of the B 747-200s?

I think it is very possible that they are going to get some 742's, they ordered 744's, A340-600's and the A380, but until the a/c will be delivered they might need some more a/c because of the need for more capacity on some routes.
I can't be totally sure, but I think they are going to get some 742's.

I think they will probably just order some 742s on short term leases to fill capacity while they await there new Airbuses and B744s.
