Air Canada Extends The Leases On Their Bae 146's

Wed Feb 14, 2001 2:19 am

Bae Systems announced today, that Air Canada have extended the leases on their 10 Bae 146-200 aircraft.

There has been talk in the past that the 146's were being retired from Air Canada Regional network in favour
of another RJ. So its well done to BAE for keeping the aircraft with Air Canada.

There are no details as to how long the new leases are
to extend for.

Too bad we don't see those in Ontario. I wonder if Air Canada's financial situation is the cause for them to keep these older airplanes instead of investing in newer RJ's. I understand that AC is now going to keep some of their older airplanes a little bit longer than originally planned due to financial reasons.

The recent financial results for Air Canada may explain why AC wants to keep those 146s in its fleet for longer than expected. It's also why AC's also painting the 737-200s in AC colors.

Personally, I don't mind the 146s at all - they're pretty nice planes to fly in after all, and they're not that old.

I like the BAe 146s. They're interesting looking and very quiet! My cousin had a unique experience on one of them. He was flying an AirBC model, and his flight was supposed to have departed at 7am. The pilots couldn't start the engines though! So the passengers all sat on board patiently, and then finally at around 9am, they got the engines. However, when the engines came on, they had another problem. The cabin lights went out.... they just departed anyways. Just thought I'd share that with you guys.

I'm glad to see them stay around a while longer, I quite like these aircraft.

As to why they're staying, I think it comes down to a matter of priorities. The F28's are higher priority to replace, so they're going to be taking those out of service before the 146 fleet starts to dwindle. I'm guessing the 146's have about 2 or maybe 3 years left before they're replaced.
