Northwest Is The Most Improved Airline Of 2000

Wed Feb 14, 2001 8:27 am

According to the numbers from the FORTUNE study, Northwest Airlines improved the most of all the major airlines in the U.S last year.

How the major airlines compare (followed by their overall score/last
year's score, and how much they improved/declined):
1. Southwest Airlines (7.62 / 6.95)= +.67
2. Continental Airlines (7.02 / 6.72)= +.30
3. Delta Air Lines (6.49 / 5.97) = +.52
4. AMR (6.22 / 6.01) = +.21
5. Northwest Airlines (5.36 / 4.59) =  Smile +.77  Smile
6. UAL (4.69 / 5.78) = -.82  Sad
7. Alaska Air Group (4.31 / 5.57)= -1.26  Sad
8. Trans World Airlines (3.38 / 3.56)= -.18
9. America West Holdings (3.29 / 4.03)= -.74
10. US Airways Group (3.22 / 3.82)= -.6

SO now let's put the list in order of MOST IMPROVED:

1. Northwest
2. Southwest
3. Delta
4. Continental
5. American
6. TWA
7. USAirways
8. America West
9. United
10.Alaska

I agree. It used to be where I wouldn't go near the *thought* of hopping on those red and gray jets. ...even if they paid ME to do so!. NW practically used to make Greyhound look like SQ's Raffles class on wheels.

Now, if only they'd fire those mean-ass broads who pretend to be "Customer Service Agents" at DTW & MSP, they'd really be alright.

Better customer service skills are definitely needed at NW's hub airports.

Wow, you're telling me Alaska was worse than UA last year? Hard to believe.

yes, NWA improved a lot, but if you take a look the absolute score, you will see that NWA had only 5.36 last year after improvement. NWA is still way behind many other American-based airlines. It is easier for NWA to raise its score since it wasn't an outstanding airline at all. For airlines that already scored high, it is harder for them to improve relatively.
However, I am really surprised that UAL dropped so much. It is now even behind NWA.

my two cents

, I am really surprised that UAL dropped so much:

Why UA had a horrible year last year.

Northwest is at 5.36 and I honestly think that is a little plow for what they deserve. Don't forget that the AQR rated NW as #4 for 1999 (up from #9 in 1998) so they clearly are getting better.

Could some PLEASE list the criteria that a survey uses before just blurting out results. It always bugs me when people say "X airline is best" or whatever, without explaining what basis they have for making that judgement.

Now, yes, I realize one can just go to Fortune's website, but I doubt many people will do that.

Have you guys noticed they ve been running full page adds in USA today almost everyday listing lowest fares, I think they are really trying hard to improve their image, now if only they could change that livery.

They are trying really hard and they do have a product worth showing off!!

The agents in DTW and MSP are friendly in my opinion.

My only comment is that NW could learn a thing or to in the advertising area. If they would advertise all the great things they do, their image would be even better.

Way to go NW....people are noticing the improvement!

I disagree with the rating of NW's innovativeness....

They have a lot of technology such as internet check-in
Eservice Centers
Auto upgrades for elite members
Rebooking cell phone banks that are wheelinto gate area when a flight gets cancelled
hand held checkin devices so gate agents can move around

and the list goes on....

I'm happy to see that NW has improved so much, continuing a trend from the low point of 1998 with the DTW fiasco and the pilot strike. It will be interesting to see what 2001 holds for NW, with a major rift between the airline and the mechanics. Let's hope for the best NW fans!

I was just thinking about how much this forum's opinion of NW has changed. I remember when all you had to do was put NW in the subject and you would get about 10 people wriitng hate posts. It's so great to see the opinion of NW rising among us airliners.net people and I know it is rising with the general public too.

If you are still an NW doubter and haven't flown them for a while, I urge you to give them a try. You'll like NW (almost as much as I do)

Does anyone know what the rankings of all the airlines internationally are? What are the best in the world and how AC measures up to them?

When you are at the bottom of the heap, the only way to go is up. Let's see if they can stay there.

Regarding the best airlines in the world, the awards are usually spread around Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Virgin. I wouldn't be surprised to see British Airways back up there next year as they really seem to have got their act together this year.

I guess that in the scheme of things, CP aren't the best, but then again they aren't the worst either.

"When you are at the bottom of the heap, the only way to go is up. Let's see if they can stay there fat chance":

NW was towards the bottom of the heap for about 2 years around 1997/8.

However, they lead the major hub and spoke carriers in ontime performance for the decade 1990-1999.....they ran a very sound operation throughout most of the 1990s again with a slide in 1997,1998...but have since turned around and become one of the best again.

They have been running a great operation for 75 years.
So to you "wpr8e" I say fat chance they won't stay there.

You don't have to try hard to look for positives at NW, as many people have said on this forum in other posts, there are many posisitves.

Just be happy that they continue to make so much improvement rather than being so cynical.

....yea but they are getting pretty darn close.

#2 Ontime
#3 Luggage
#3 Complaints
#2 Involunatary Denied Boardings

Among the hub and spoke carriers is GREAT perfomance (overall I think only Delta was better with #4 ontime, #1 luggage, #1 IDB, #1 complaints)

To use all these indicators to rank who is most improved is a rubbish comparison.

TWA used to be right up there on bags, on time, etc. but they nearly went out of business.

I have flown many times, mostly international and NW is by far the worst airline I have ever flown. Well Egyptair was the worst so they are the second.

They might get you there on-time but if the cabin crew were rude, the $3,000 business class seat that you sat in was crap, the in-flight didn't work and the 800 pound flight attendent from Minny with a f-uped accent was a complete bitch the whole flight. If that is improvement that you can take it.

When NW wins ANY business class award, service award, best in-flight award, best frequent flier program, one of the best airlines/companies to work for in America, or Airline of the Year then come back on this forum.

Stop the NW lovefest

NW,thats great but when will they retire those old
DC-9's and DC-10's? they are too old, and the thought
of going on a D10 to europe is not good.

AA767400, Northwest has ordered some A330-300 and 757-300 to replace the DC-10. The Avro RJ85 , maybe the A319, and probably a new plane will be ordered to replace the DC-9. It will take a few years for the planes to be delivered, so be patient.

I think the first step Northwest should take to be number 1 is to settle the mechanic problems.
I think they should offer more better amenities in the new planes like an improved first class(some airlines have a better biz class) and coach.(I think they should compete with Delta, Continental, United, and American in service, who have PTVs, comfy headrests, etc. KLM has introduced a new economy class, and it looks great. I think Northwest should follow its partner.) I think that's what people mean by "innovation"
I like WorldPerks, but I think they should strengthen Wings and add some partners to improve the FF program.
The current DTW doesn't look good, but by next year, NWA will finish their spectacular new terminal. It looks great.

Northwest should advertise more often now that they are doing very well on reliability. It might get some of those angry United customers their business.
Things look bright for NWA.

Wpr8e:

I have been around this forum much longer than you have and I am respected by a lot of users. Please don't tell me : " then come back on this forum"

To use all these indicators to rank who is most improved is a rubbish comparison"

So why does the US Department of Transportation, the Airline Quality Rating Survey, Fortune, and countless others rely on these ratings?

Also, TWA has has decent ontime performance for a couple of years -- BUT their luggage has not been good and if you look at ontime for the decade they rank #7.

"the cabin crew were rude"

The flight attendants on NW are consistently as good or better than every other US Airline. I have flown them all and still find NW the most likely to be friendly and helpful.

"the $3,000 business class seat that you sat in was crap"
New business class seats will be introduced with the new A330s next year. Also, the seats are not "crap" and they do provide alot of legroom and recline that I haven't found on UA or AA Business class products. Basically they need winged headrests and the seats would be just as good as UA. I am almost 100% sure the winged headrests will be coming with the A330s.

"the in-flight didn't work"
right, like that NEVER happens on any other airline.

"the 800 pound flight attendent from Minny"
Last time I checked there are weight requirement for flight attendants in that height must be in porportion to weight.

"best frequent flier program"
They did from customers in Asia who voted them Best Frequent flier program in 2000. I have seen the banners at the airports.

"or airline of the year"
NW/KLM won in 1998. Sure that was a couple of years ago, but they have improved so much since 1998!!

Now let's talk about some things NW does that NO OTHER US AIRLINE DOES:

When a flight in the hubs cancel they wheel in a bank of cell phones that connects you as the highest priority customer to the reservation telephone line.

They have portable hand held checkin devices so if the line at one gate is really long, an agent with one of these machine will come and start checking you in.

They are still one of the only airlines offering internet checkin-in. Log on, checkin in about 3 minuted, and get on the plane!

So:Perhaps before you post another response as unfounded and immaturely worded you should get your facts straight. Also, have a little respect for those who have been around longer than yoon this forum. Or at least you get some people under your "respected by" list.

Might I suggest you check the thread "NW fans speak up!" to see how many of us here support NW and all the improvements they have made.

I need other NW supporters (or even if you aren't a supporter but have flown NW and know I speak the truth) to back me up.

Thank you.

Northwest is a great airline.
My Dad flew SFO-MSP-JFK a couple of days ago.
Unfortunately, a freak snowstorm hampered operations at MSP, forcing the flight to be diverted to DTW.
They gave my Dad a $50 voucher, the new flight was no more than an extra hour late, all of the passengers were rerouted and his luggage arrived at JFK at 2 am, so Northwest had a courier deliver his luggage to his hotel! Not bad for the standard coach fare, eh?
Get your patchouli stink outta my store!

FYI: WorldPerks has been consistently rated as the best FF program, and the easiest to earn miles. I have flown NW twice since I joined WorldPerks, and I am only one more short trip away, and no I'm not talking international.

My first flight was DTW-MEM-MCO-DTW-ORD-DTW, and the second was TOL-DTW-MEM-MCO-DTW. As it stand, I now have 16,000 miles. I'd like to see someone accrue that on another carrier!

Braniff727 -

I am loyal WorldPerks Elite, but I wouldn't even come close to saying that it is the best FF program out there. Why? Lets begin....

a) No segment-based Elite qualification.
b) Lack of international upgrade opportunities
c) No dedicated service line for Silver Elites
d) No miles for Cyberfares
e) No access to WorldClubs for USA based elites.
f) Class of service bonus does not count as base miles.
g) No international rulebuster awards.

etc....

NWA747-400,

I don't give a rats ass what people think of me on this board. If you want to win the popularity contest with buttkissing NW fans then bend over.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that you were on my flight from NRT to SEL last week. I guess you missed that bitch of a Flight Attendent. If she doesn't like her "SERVICE" job then quit.

If you want to discount my many trips on NW because you know better through some sort of crystal ball that you and all your "respected fans" know better, I don't want to here it.

I have flown over 50 airlines all over the world. Very few are outstanding, many are OK and few are just down right rotten. NW is one of those that is rotten. That is my opinion. I'm sorry if some NW lover like yourself is not going to "respect" me for that.

They launch a "new WBC" but then say that we are not going to give you the new real seats until the new planes arrive. Uhh? What kind of customer service is that?

I don't care that NW won best FFP in Asia. I don't live there.

The height/weight requirement is only related hiring. They cannot be fired for gaining weight.

If longevity is directly related to how much you are suppose to know, then you better go back to school.

Your tone and lanuage are inapproriate and I hope the site has something to say about them.

Respect is key to any forum like this.

We are all entitled to our opinions, but at least be able to back them up with concrete evidence.

I have about 100,000 flown miles on NW to date, while that doesn't make me an expert, I think it gives me a pretty good idea of what I am talking about.

That said: I just got back from a great trip on NW/CO and I will be posting a trip report soon.

I am also planning a trip to Tokyo and it looks like it will be in NW Economy class (unless I can find a better deal)probably sometime towards the end of the month.

Everyone else: Thanks for your continued support and reconigtion for all the hard work we have seen NW do over the past couple of years.
