Booking Online Experience

Thu Feb 15, 2001 1:15 am

What is your experience of booking air tickets online?

I once ordered a US Shuttle DCA-LGA.
Very nice, dirt low fares and the ticket delivered to my home via FedEx.

It's far more frustrating when I tried to book a long range flight (only 1 to 2 flights each day on the same route) last time. "Cannot confirm" my ticket each time on Expedia or Travelocity because the airline apparently won't let me buy the ticket with the quoted (low) price. If that price is unavailable they should not offer it in the first place!  Angry

HI A380.

I've never bought a ticket completely online. However, when I have gone to AC's web site, I have always found their info, prices, times etc., to be accurate. If saw a ticket on their website I was always able to buy it in fact, over the phone. So my partial online experience has been fine so far. God bless,

I have used both ebookers.com and the British Airways website, and have found the process to be smooth every time.
I do sympathise with the way in which multi airline sites like expedia and ebookers will publish fares which are very low, and when you try to book them it tells you that they are unavailable, and so you have to trawl through the listings until you eventually find a fare that is available. This can take a while for some routes.

In the UK, STA travel's website only seems to publish the fares which are still available, and this saves a lot of time. The only problem with STA is that they tend to cater towards student/budget travellers and so the fares they quote tend to be on scary Eastern European/Middle Eastern deathtraps!
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

What I usually do is to use two or three general travel websites to research fares. Then I go to individual airlines' web sites to buy. It takes a bit longer, but an airline reservation site will only quote you fares that are still available. Also, many airlines offer bonus frequent flyer miles or other perks for purchasing through their own web site.

I've never had any trouble with a ticket bought online (knock on wood) and I've bough every ticket I could this way over the past two years or so. That's roughly 20 trips, so I guess I have a fairly decent percentage going so far.

I've booked dozens of flights with ticketless airlines such as Go, Ryanair, Buzz and Easyjet in the UK. Easyjet show you flights on dates either side of the days you have requested. This can be a real money saver. Everything is usually great and I always get mad prices. Once or twice I have had an error 404 after clicking on submit after entering my credit card details. You then don't know if your booking was accepted or not. This usually happens when they are really busy because of special deals like London to Barcelona for GBP 35 round-trip inc tax ! (=USD 50)

A good UK based consolidator is http://www.telmeglobaltraveller.com. They only display fares that are actually available and it also shows fares that are cheaper if you are prepered to change your dates a little bit.
