Air Transat

Thu Feb 15, 2001 11:21 am

While recently planning a vacation, I came across a web site that detailed a couple's experience with Air Transat.

Is the airline that bad? It reminded me of Tower Air. Does anyone have any experience with this airline? How does it compare to the other Canadian charter airlines - Royal, Canada 3000 and Skyservice.

Air Transat shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Tower Air, but they certainly aren't the best Canadian charter airline. The main problem is delays are all too frequent. When I passed through terminal 3 (I flew on Canada 3000 to LGW) I watched as the 300 or so passengers were waiting for more than 4 hours for their L-1011-500. Babies crying all the time...didn't look like too much fun. This can happen to any airline but many report it happens quite often at Air Transat. Their seating is also relativley cramped, but don't forget it is a charter.

I wouldn't mind flying Air Transat for a flight to Vegas or Florida, but not for Trans-Atlantic.

I have flown on Air Transat on a flight from YYZ to FLL and it was ok. I much rather Canada 3000. I flew on the 757-200 with Air Transat to FLL. There 757's are ok. I dont know how their L-1011's are but your better off with Canada 3000 on Trans Atlantic with their Wide Bodied A330-200 2-4-2 configuration unlike Air Transat with their 3-3-3 configuration. I also flew Royal Airlines when they had their 727-200's from YYZ to POS. It was a great flight but I havent flown them since 95 so I have no idea how they are now. Canada 3000's A330-200's are great because I flown on C-GGWC from YYZ to POS. Its a great aircraft.

I flew Air Transat B757-200 YYZ - DUB a couple of years ago. It was 6.5 hours of sheer misery. The aircraft was fine but the seats were awful and the aircraft was configured for 222 pax so there was very little room. Easily the worst flight I was ever on.
I have no memory of this place.

Ya delays are a big problem, every time I have flown, 3 times, the flight has been delayed 3 or more hours, Royal was great, ahead of schedule there and back. Royal has great service, all 4 flights were to Las Vegas (LAS) on the AT L1011's and Royal's A310/304. They were ok to get to Vegas but ya, a longer flight would be too crammed. Personally I would try and avoid AT, and choose Royal, friends have flown Sky Service and really liked it compared to AT.

I would say, AT is safe and maybe their delays are long but I'm sure they will make sure you get there. So choose an airline that give you a good price and if AT's price is really low, take it but expect delays, thats what I do, so when you get there its not to bad,

Drive it like you stole it!

Air Transat is certainly a good choice when it comes to vacation planning. They have a very good quality price ratio. Most of their fleet is composed of wide bodies which are more comfortable when it comes to trans-atlantic flights. Their B757 are not the most comfortable but Canada 3000 and Royal have the same configuration on their B757. The L1011 is quite comfortable. It as a 31-33 inches seat pitch comprable to most of the sched airlines. Service in economy is very good. Wine is serve for free with your meal. You have to know that you have to pay 5$ for the head sets (which come with an eye band ans a pair of socks) compare to C3 where you get only a pair of head set. alcool is also not free but the same on C3. the video entertainement is superior to C3 and QN. TS just added new plasma screens on the L1011-500 and Airbus A310-300. The video programmation is interesting with recent movies and AT-TV featuring music videos, cartoons and funny sketches.
If you fly with air Transat you should greatly appreciate it.

best regards

I flew on Air Transat from Portugal on Sunday on the A330-300, and found it quite comfortable. I have had horrible Air Transat flights, however. The L1011's are really nice, but cramped, even compared to the A330's. Their service is not bad, but not up to Royal standards. On Royal you get free bar service, and free headsets, which you would have to pay for on Air Transat.

What really bothers me about Air Transat are the frequent delays, but beyond that, it is the fact that you get on the airplane, and only then do they tell you it's delayed, and make you sit there for 2 hours or so!!! That has happened a couple times already, and it really gets to me. If they could get rid of that habit, I think Air Transat would be a very good airline, and I wouldn't hesitate to fly with them so much.

Man I can't stand people who complain about the seats on the charter airlines......!!!!!!!!!!! THE ARE ALL THE SAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! give or take a few seats every 757 in the Canadian Charter Market is configured the same....and for god sake it is a charter airline, and you pay for what you get.....That said, Transat is notorious for delays and their customer service does leave something to be desired for.....I would take any of the other companies if ever possible....ROYAL, Skyservice, or Elite!
