Has Boeing Launched The 747x?

Sat Feb 17, 2001 2:57 am

I'm wondring if Boeing has launched it's A380 rival, the 747x.

I hope they have, because it will be sad if the present 744 is the last 747 Boing will build.

Nope. They have Qantas in their orders books for 744LR, but that's not to be confused with 747X. You'll know when they launch 747X- you can bet that this forum will be buzzing for weeks.

Will the launch it one day or will it became a "dead project"?

They have started the program, but not the actual plane though. I think Boeing will do very well especially if the 747NG has a similar cockpit to the 744.

Boeing Has Launched The 747x

Sat Feb 17, 2001 7:39 am

Yes, Boeing has launched 747X back in Nov 28, 2000.

According to Boeing...

With the Nov. 28, 2000, launch of the new Longer-Range 747-400, all references to the "747-400X" are now changed to the Longer-Range 747-400, also known as the 747-400ER.

So, hopefully we'll see Qantas flying the 747-400ER around 4 or 5 years later.

Jim,

Still, we have to differ between the "Longer Range B747-400" (ordered by Qantas) on the one hand, and the B747X (stretched) on the other hand. Boeing confuses people by introducing the "Longer Range" prefix to current designations, e.g. B767-400 and B747-400, which aren't any kind of "new" models - just enhanced versions. In opposite to these "longer range" upgrades, the B747X will be a completely new airliner, based on the B747-400, with stretched fuselage, new wings, etc.! Boeing should dub the new model B747-500X to clear up the potential misunderstanding. BTW, I heard that FedEx was in negotiations with Boeing to acquire the B747X Freighter (in addition to the A380-100F or by cancelling the Momerandum of Understanding with Airbus???). Keep in mind, a MoU does not necessarily mean the airline will acquire the related aircraft!

To Notarzt - FedEx And 747? How? Why?

Tue Feb 20, 2001 6:12 am

In regards to "FedEx was in negotiations with Boeing to acquire the B747X Freighter (in addition to the A380-100F or by cancelling the Momerandum of Understanding with Airbus???)," I was wondering where you heard that. I would think that after the order for the A380, there is no chance for the 747 of any kind at FedEx.

Boeing has not launched 747X or 747XS, but may launch them in the future if they get enough launch orders. Boeing's leadership has said they consider it unlikely they'll build either plane, but as said it may well still happen.
