Just Saw An Antonov An-124. Big Plane!

Sat Feb 17, 2001 9:58 am

Went by the airport this afternoon for a drive and spotted an antonov an-124 sitting there, outside a hangar. I've never seen one before, except in photos. Very impressive. Although it wasn't that close to me I could tell that it's huge. Has anyone been near or in one at an air show? Or even the an-225? What are they like close up?

I've seen An-124's landing and taking off from Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View, CA on a regular basis (they usually carry out completed satellites).

That plane is BIG. It's even bigger than the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy.

BIGGER THAN A C-5, not but much though only a few feet. i have been onboard an an-124 ( C-5ski) they have a large crew compliment and a large flight deck its very immpressive. ive also been on an IL-96 ( c-141ski) it too was neat.

I have been on a few. If you go to the back of the aircraft there is a ladder that takes you to the crew quarters. There was perhaps 6 beds, some tables and chairs, an oven but not too many windows. At the back of the crew quarters is the washroom, there is a small trap door in there that leads to the tail section. There were a bunch of aircraft manuals and a ladder to the top of the tail.

In the front the ladder takes you to the cocpit, where there is seats for the pf, pnf an engineer, radio operater, navigator and I don't know what else but there was six seats. Behind the cocpit was the walk-in avionics bay, behind that were more private crew rooms etc.

I haven't been on the 225 but if it's bigger than the 124 it must be huge.

Ive seen two side by side before at YHM they bring in parts for ford all the time. Its too bad the enonomy is slowing means less cars being build so less flights also big job losses but anyway they are impressive.

I seen 3 sitting side by side at Palma de Mallorca in the summer. I went past them in a Spanair MD83 as we were taxiing out. They are HUGE. I read somewhere that they have a pressureised cabin in the upper rear section of the a/c that can accomodate 88 pax, is this true?

Yep. They have a "passenger cabin" on the upper deck, I don't remember the exact number of passengers it can accomodate, but 88 sounds right. The cabin is used to carry people who travel with the cargo or military personnel when operated by the Air Force.
Need any more info?

A while ago, An-124s dropped by occasionally to transport parts for Raytheon. I haven't seen one lately. One day I saw two of them, one in front of the other, it was an amazing sight. I wish I had my camera then!

Ive been almost right upto one and they are HUGE and very very loud, even at the gate. My Sunways MD83 had landed at IST from MAN and i left the plane through the rear exit (in between the engines) and I thaught that was loud, but when I got to the ground i turned to the shuttle bus and it was infront of a 124 and it was dwarfed!! by the time we left the terminal landside, it was taking off and the airport shudder-not kidding!!! They must be common in IST because it was there when I returned. It was a Volga Dnerpr i think. Aeroflottish colours.

Every once in a while one will land at SWF, which is also a C5 NY ANG location. I have tried to get a picture of both a C5 and an An-124, but have not been able to line up the shot. The shot that got away that bothers me the most was 2 years ago as I was driving by SWF, Air Force One was parked at the ANG location alongside several C-5's, and an An-124 was in the background at a cargo ramp location. I raced home to get my camera, but by the time I got back, both Air Force 1 and the 124 were gone. I now carry my camera in the car whenever possible. From what I understand, the An-124 is bigger but the C-5 will carry a heavier payload. Can anyonw confirm this?

Here are your stats:

An-124; 226ft length 240ft wide

C-5; 247ft length 222ft wide

291,000lbs max cargo for C-5

thats: 2 M-1 tanks/16 trucks/5 M-113s or 365 troops

The C-5 is bigger than the 124. There's a technicality the Russians like to use to claim the fame. The An-124 is in fact HEAVIER then the C-5, but it's not LARGER. The reason is that in Russia, they have more titanium, and the cargo floor is reinforced to allow it to haul more weight. There's a difference. The C-5 is 20 ft longer, and has 20 more feet of wing. The dimensions of the AN-124's fuselage and wing all around are smaller, but it has more power and can haul more cargo. HEAVIER, not BIGGER.

I have worked on C-5's for 7 years now, and have had a couple of occasions been allowed on the AN-124. The 124 is not at all that impressive to me, when you compare the C-5, and the 124. Maybe I'm just partial to my bird.

To Galaxy5: I used to be stationed at Dover for 4 years, Then worked on them at Kadena AB, Okinawa. What do you do on them?

I've been on a Volga Dnerpr 124 in Shannon in Ireland where they are often brough for engine changes and light maintenance. I though it was very impressive, but the aircraft was generally in a bad state... the threads on the some of the tyres was very low. I think the cargo loading system is intersting... they use a crane that runs the length of the cabin roof instead of rollers on the floor.
Oh yeah... there was a C-5 and a An-124 parked right beside each other at the RIAT in Fairford 2 years ago I think... I think I have a photo somewhere.

There's usually one at DTW at one of the cargo hangars. It's right next to the employee lot so it's pretty close and easy to see. The thing is gigantic!

While looking at all you people saying that the An-124 is huge, I've seen one myself in HKG and I was disappointed. It just looks around as tall as a 747 and is also around as big as a C-5 that I've touched at YXX.

The only time I've seen the Antonov 124 -- doesn't seem as large as I imagined.

Some two years ago I saw an A124 landing at ZRH on rwy 16. At first sight I didn't look very carefully. Seeing the 4 engines and the highdecker wings, I thought it was an BAe 146!!!  Wink/being sarcastic But as I said, it was far away and I didn't look carefully.

Imagine, the second time I looked around, and noticed, that this little point in the sky turned out to be huge, I mean really huge!! What an aircraft, What a luck, that I had my camera there  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

In 1995 I was at an Air show at the Antonov factory in Kiev Ukraine. I saw and touched An 124 and An225. They sure are big, but not as big as I thought they would be! The main gear on the 225 badly needed new tires,They were all torn up.

The first AN225 was supposed to have made it's Second First flight this month, does anyone have any info on this plane?? I think Antonov said they wanted to have it in service for the spring/summer...

Surprised that it hasn't already been mentioned here, but there is usually one or two AN-124s on the ground at IAH.

I've been in An-225 once - pretty impressive. This is where my username comes from.
