Wide Bodies For The DL Shuttle

Fri Apr 23, 1999 11:21 pm

I was thinking that maybe Delta should replace the old 727s with the newer 767-200s on their Shuttle routes (DCA-LGA, BOS-LGA, DCA-BOS). Sure, at some times the plane would be empty, but during the hours of 6AM/PM to 9AM/PM the planes would be packed, also taking out shuttles at other times, like the 7:20A to LGA from BOS when there is a 7:30A to LGA also. They should at least get some larger planes.

Maybe they should just operate them during the times that you stated?

I was thinking that getting 767's would be a good idea too. However, I read somewhere once that widebodies are not allowed to land at DC National. I could be wrong, but I have never seen a widebody there. The biggest that lands (I think) is the 757. Maybe they could use them on the LGA-BOS route.

That is true AF777. I don't think anything bigger than a 757 operate into Ronald Reagan Airport.

Eastern used to fly A300's on the LGA-BOS sector, but the DCA-LGA route was always a narrowbody. I think Eastern flew an A300 into DCA like one time as sort of a test thing but I guess it was never approved. I guesst hey don't have the room for the widebodies. The L1011 was built for Eastern specifically for use into LGA and DCA, but they never flew it to DCA. Once a long time ago I saw and American DC-10 at DCA, but that is the only widebody i ever saw there and I don't know what it was doing

I don't think Delta will put any widebody on the shuttle flights because, like AF777 said, widebodies don't land in DCA. Their best bet would be to replace the 727's with 737-300's in the middle of the 2000's. Delta says that the last 727 will be phased out in 2005, I think that the last batch of 727's that will leave will be the ones currently used on the shuttle flights. So, you may see 727's at the Delta Shuttle for five more years or so.

How about 757's for the shuttle. Since DCA can't handle jumbos, the 757 would be the perfect higher capacity plane.

I read in Airway's airticle about National and Dulles that the 767-200 has been approved to fly into DCA, but no airline has decided to us them in to there yet.

I read the same article as SW. I thought it was all 767 models, however....? Anyone know?

Yes, all models are allowed. I didn't have the magazine with me at the time I typed my prior post. Sorry.

No...it's okay....I was too lazy to go downstairs and get the issue!! I was also going to post about the A300 thing...can't find the AirShuttle article, though...I thought it was because the FAA was afraid of the A300's weight crushing the pilings on the runway...?
