LH To Start Round The World Service?

Mon Feb 19, 2001 2:48 pm

was not able to find an old thread on on this one - hope that it is not old 'news'.

LH will suposedly start a round the world service in summer 2001, routing FRA-LAX/SFO-NAN-MEL-SIN-FRA

that would also put LH back onto the kangaroo (sp?) route

any truth / additional info on this one ?

sonds very, verya strange.
why should lufthansa fly to nadi (NAN)?
lufthansa has often been reported not wanting to operate flights with more than one stop, so this seems unlikely.
i certainly don´t see why they should serve LAX/SFO-MEL, there´s already NZ and UA in the market, and soon AN.
another thing came to my mind just now.
i don´t think that it would be easy and viable to integrate such a rotation into their schedule, at least not this summer sched, because their 744s flights to
LAX/SFO are supposed to serve the following rotation:
FRA-LAX-MUC MUC-LAX-FRA
FRA-SFO-MUC MUC-SFO-FRA
that´s because LH has no 744s based in MUC but deploys them on daily basis from MUC to SFO/LAX this summer.
so they had to fit in the NAN-flights, and that seems quite complicated to me.
FRA-LAX-NAN
NAN-LAX-MUC
MUC-LAX-FRA
this is just based on a guess, just my random thoughts.

well, bottom line, i highly doubt this round the world thing.

best wishes

Yeah, I also highly doubt it. If ever, this could only be a LH Cargo routing. But they probably won´t intruduce such a pax service.

a cargo service?
i didn´t find anything on either traxon.com nor on the LH cargo site.
just checked the distances and for the most part, no LHC plane could make one of these flights without major payload restrictions. the 742F with max payload makes it 6500km, the M11F which i assume would most probably be used on this route, doesn´t go much further than 7500km fully loaded with cargo. they´d have to make another stop on their way to SFO/LAX, most probably ORD, that´s how they´re operating usually, and at least another stop from SIN to FRA, most probably SHJ.
just for the records...
FRA SFO 9163 km
FRA LAX 9334 km
LAX NAN 8880 km
SFO NAN 8782 km
NAN MEL 3882 km
MEL SIN 5998 km
SIN FRA 10282 km
as far as i´m concerned, i don´t think this service is already being operated and i doubt it will happen. however, this is just my guess, and don´t quote me, ´cause i can´t say for sure. we´ll just have to wait and see...

best wishes
daniel

doesn LH have some touristic "round-the-world" arrangement,.
I am not sur if it is LH only or Star Alliance thing

in cooperation with its star partners, lufthansa offers indeed some round-the-world trips.

friend of mine in the airfreight industry mentioned it, so hb-iwc's info that it is a freighter makes sense.

as JBG points out, there would be payload issues though, but freight does not care if it has to stop along the way...

I have somewhere read something regarding this route, and, IIRC, there was at least another stop between SIN and FRA. Don't remember where, though...

Someone said a while back in another post that LH cargo would fly to Auckland I don't know if this is true or not I hope so.

Are They The Only One?

Tue Feb 20, 2001 1:38 pm

I thought there were carriers already spanning the globe, such as SQ. Any confirmation?

The service is a freighter MD11 either 3 or 4 a week. One additional stop before LAX then to PPT (tech stop)/AKL/MEL/SIN/SHJ ??/FRA.
The sector from LAX to AKL/MEL is a code share with NZ who will take most of the space then revert back to LH from MEL to FRA.
This will also affect Polar Air Cargo as most of their flights to Australia are on behalf of Air New Zealand.

word from LH SIN cargo dept is that this will be taking effect with the summer schedule (end mar 2001), once per week using MD-11:
FRA - (undisclosed tech stop) - LAX - (undisclosed tech stop) - SYD - PEN - SHJ - FRA

well, this is very interesting.
a few posts ago, i stated that i highly doubted this service. seems i´ve been wrong...  Wink/being sarcastic
to be sure, i contacted the lufthansa cargo office in LAX and asked for some info.
according to their mail, there will be a joint venture between LAX/LH (don´t know what that means, anyone has a clue?) starting in april . as for the schedule....
this flight, LH8400, will operate an thursday, fridays and sundays, and leaves LAX at 04.10 in the morning and arrives in MEL one day later, 18.50. service will operated from 01APR through 26OCT01, the aircraft will be a M11F.
i had hoped for more detailed information but that´s all i got.
this routing reflects some of what some of you guys heard. hope anyone has some further info. as soon as i get to know something more, i let you knows.

JBG
departure lax at 0410 and arrival mel 1850 A DAY later, really shows you that the earth is NOT a disc and that there are, what, 20 / 21 hours in time difference between LAX and MEL - plus flight time of, what, two times 7/8 hours (via whatever this will end up being).

would look much better the other way around though, with leaving MEL and reaching LAX same day, even 'before' having left from MEL..
