It was delivered new from Boeing.
All new Cargolux B747-400Fs since 1998 have had RR RB211-524G-H/T engines - change of engine policy within the company. They have 5 such aircraft, plus 5 older GE powered B747-400Fs.

No, these were all delivered new to Cargolux as freighters. Their first -400Fs were CF6 powered but they went with the RB-211s for their new batch of -400Fs. They have been around a couple of years as they were operating the RR powered frieghters into Fairbanks when I was still working for them in '98.

Thanks, but does anyone know a reason why Cargolux switched types, it seems strange, the RB.211 is not extremely popular on the 747.

The RB211 is an extremely popular engine in general, being used on everything from L1011s, 747s, 757s, some 767s and even the Tupelov TU204.

They either got a good long term deal with Rolls Royce; they werent totally happy with the performance (or some other aspect) of the GE engine or maybe they struck a nice maintenance and spares deal with a supplier and maitenance provider who works with Rolls Royce more closely.

I wonder if it could have been the reported problems with the CF6?
