Body Found In Wheel Well Of US Airways 767-200

Wed Feb 21, 2001 9:15 am

Kind of nasty. What do you guys think went wrong?

Feb 20, 2001

A body was found in the wheel well of a U.S. Airways jet that landed at San Francisco International Airport on a flight from London, it was reported today.

The unidentified man was discovered a few minutes after the plane touched down late yesterday. The cause of death was not known.

Flight 741 originated at London's Gatwick airport and made a stop in Pittsburgh before landing in San Francisco at 9:13 p.m.

US Airways spokesman David Castelveter said it was unknown where and when the man boarded the jet.

London authorities said the victim appeared to fit the description of a man who was arrested at Gatwick on Sunday for attempting to gain access to an airport. The man was released on bail and authorities planned to fax his fingerprints to California.

A mechanic checking a possible hydraulic leak found the man in the 767-200's center wheel well, which is about 15 feet wide and 20 feet long, said airport duty manager Mike Towle.

Last August, a man survived a freezing flight across the Pacific in the wheel well of an Air France jet that landed at the Los Angeles airport. The flight originated in Papeete, French Polynesia.

In fact, KRON TV (NTSC Channel 4) in San Francisco, CA had a live report about that tragic discovery.

SFO Spokesman Ron Wilson said that he was not surprised that the man was dead--he would have died from a combination of hypothermia and lack of oxygen at high altitudes.

It seems there have been a rash of stoaways lately. Who knows, your last flight could have had someone in the wheelwell? This is also a safety concern. What if that man was strapped with explosives? Or, seeing that people can actually gain access to the plane, that man could have placed plastic explosives in the wheel well and left. It's really scary.

The cause of death is unknown... How do you think the guy died? It's sometimes hard for me to believe that these newspaper writers actually went to college.

On the 5PM live report on KRON, Ron Wilson suspected either the guy was killed by the landing gear "there were lots of hand and foot prints" or from freezing. BTW- The registration of the aircraft involved is N650US, a 767-200ER originally delivered to Piedmont on 5/3/88 as N617P.

Wouldn't he have died of oxygen starvation before freezing to death?

Either way, it shows that the darwinian process of natural selection is alive and kicking, even if all its subjects aren't  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Apparently he was wearing LGW mechanic's overalls, but the airport said that none of their staff was reported missing. So the guy, who was apparently a young Afro-Caribbean, must have disguised himself. It's a bit wierd though - most people try to get INTO the UK!

On a darker note, the security aspects are frightening.....

If this flight landed in Pittsburgh and continued on to SFO, how thorough was the pre-flight checks prior to departure from Pittsburgh? If you cant see a body stuck up in a wheel well, are you going to see the oil leak or cracked strut?

What I want to know is how the body didn't just sort of "fall out" when the gear doors opened on approach. If there was nothing but a corpse in there, no effort to "hold on" to something would've been made.
Can someone please aloborate?

Gatwick had 2 fatalities in wheel-wells (or whatever you call them) a couple of weeks back, 2 brothers from Cuba.

Why do they bother?
