Sun Apr 25, 1999 5:46 pm

Air France will annouce its american partner this year ; they will have to choose between Delta and Continental.

Which one do you thing it will be the AF's partner ?

I believe it will be DL.

DL is bigger than CO so DL mights be a better choice.
Then again CO has the Newark hub and AF probably likes that they have a big hub in the NY area. CO's service is also way better than DL's.

New York- DL has plenty of space available at their JFK Terminals (DL terminals are 2&3) because they shove so much into LGA. AF is also factoring into the decision cargo. because of the terrible configuration of the JFK terminals there is plenty of cargo space coupled with their being a partner in the terminal one group. Using Deltas facilities would be easier because they would actually be IN New York not just in the "vacinity" of New York as with co.

World port-Talk about of plenty of space, The city of Atlanta tear down a rain forest for Delta.

It will be interesting to see, because DL & AF are basically in the same position, on the outside looking in, 2 huge alliances being formed one featuring AA, the UA. everyone is getting married but no-one has proposed to DL or AF. DL carries more people than any other airline in the world & is the #1 transatlantic airline. AF is THE french airline.

My understanding is that DL does not have a European partner, ever since DL broke up with Virgin Atlantic. I think they should go with AF.

I think it will be DL as well..because if you have enough sky miles on DL you can get a free ticket on AF's Concorde

DL no european partner? What about SN/SR/OS and the whole Qualiflyer group? I think AF might go to Wings. They had talks about a year ago with AZ , but AZ and KL are builiding very integrated ties -for instance, KL will move some of its cargo ops at MXP-, so I dunno how much room ther is for AF in there... The Qualiflyer group is pretty much covering europe, so AF might mean more redundancy than complementarity. Soooooo, i dunno, but AF should have made a move a while back...

I think it will be CO. Delta has already the European side with Swissair and the Qualiflyer alliance, and I heard recently that Swissair are buying over the French airline AOM, so I can't see Air France joining with them. As YMQ said, the European sector seems pretty well sewn up by the Qualiflyer group. Anyway, it seems more logical that Air France would go with Continental, since both of them are pretty much looking for the same thing, a trans-atlantic partner.

The Qualiflyer Group (SN/SR/AOM/OS/...) aren't as big as Air France.

And Air France flies to more destinatantions than they all do.

Swissair isn't big as we may thing.

Moreover they will probably reach oneworld, what would make pleasure to Air France and to ... Delta.

Yeah but Swissair are better! =) Sorry, just joking...

You make a good point about the size of AF and about DL/SR etc veering towards the onworld alliance. But, do you think there is really a need for a carrier such as AF in oneworld? After all, BA has its Air Liberte in there already, so the demand for a french carrier isn't really there, don't you think? Also, doesn't British Airways have more intra-European destinations than Air France? I have a feeling they might.

What I see happening is a new alliance between CO and AF, similar to that one of KL/NW and now AZ. CO and AF already have numerous code-share agreements, so I can see only this as a follow on from that. Anyway, time will tell I guess! =)

By the way, does anyone know how relations are between DL and AA? Is there a real possibilty that DL is looking to oneworld?

Hey SwissMiss, that CO-AF thing would not be similar to KL-NW-AZ. NW-CO are getting together and with KL-AZ and some asian airline i cannot remember right now coz'its been a very long day for me -who cares anyway- are forming a new alliance called WINGS, which is going to be bigger than the STAR alliance in terms of passengers.

Speeking of the STAR, AC has annonced that it will start putting its code on MX's YUL-MEX and YYZ-MEX. Since MX already codeshares with LH and UA, can we expect it to join the alliance? any thoughts out there?

I have never said AF may join oneworld, I have said SR may join oneworld.

I don't think DL may enter oneworld, AA and DL are competitors as far as I know.

And I don't see the interest for two major US carrier in an alliance for them. (Of course it's interesting for the european allied).

What do you think of DL-AF-JAL ?

By August Continental will offer more nonstop transatlantic from new york/newark than any other airline in the history of aviation so AF will make sense.
by the way if you are looking for a job in the industry Continental is a good choice I m really proud of working for COA ever since mr Gordon Bathune took over it has been a pleasure to work for Continental, pretty soon we'll have the youngest fleet, we already have the best service (if u didnt know, read) it helps to have ex boeing CEO running this airline, COA gets lower interests rates on new aircraft, Sorry UAL, AA, DL.
