Airlines With Both L-1011 And DC-10

Sat Feb 24, 2001 10:59 pm

Hi,

Were there any airlines that operated both the L-1011 and the DC-10 at the same time?

I know Delta has the MD-11 and L-1011 presently, but have there been any who operated both the DC-10 and L-1011?

Rgds,
Joe

Historically, I only know of three airlines that flew both the DC-10 and L-1011 simultaneously: BA, DL and UA.

BA did it when it took over British Caledonian in the late 1980's; UA did it when it took over Pan Am's fleet of L-1011-500's in the middle 1980's; and DL when it merged with Western Airlines in 1987.

However, BA sold it the ex-BCal DC-10's, UA sold off the L-1011-500's, and DL sold off the ex-Western DC-10's by the early 1990's.

Hi,

I assume Pan Am's L-1011s were acquired by Delta in the early 90's. Correct me if I am wrong.

Good morning...
Yep, there were a few airlines that operated both the DC-10 & the L-1011. Pan Am ordered & operated 12 L-1011-500, then bought National Airlines, who had DC-10s. Then United bought Pan Am's Pacific routes, which came with the L-1011s. Delta had both types for a little while also. They leased DC-10s while Lockheed was building Delta's ships. British Airways had L-1011s, then bought out British Caledonia, who had DC-10s. I think there may have been a few other airlines too, but this is all I can remember at the moment. Regards.

Not exactly. In 1991, when DL purchased PA European Division, PA was already out of the L10 business. DL got a bunch of 727's and 21 A310's. However, PA had already sold DL 3 L1011-500's somewhere around 1984-1987. Then after UA purchased the Pacific Division, they sold DL 5 more ex PA L1011-500's in the 1987-1989 time frame. Hope this makes sense.

Good day

Eastern operated a handful of DC10-30s alongside the L-1011s shortly before shutting down. Purchased mainly for newly acquired trans-Atlantic flights from Miami to London and Madrid, they occasionally operated the routes to Rio and Bogota.
My definition of cool ? Not trying so hard to be cool.

2 more points I would like to make.

I believe BA had DC10-30's after the L10's were gone. Correct me if I am wrong on that. I do know that they flew them on the LGW-ATL route until the 777 took over.

Also, I guess that means that DL operated the L10 & DC10 at the same time on 2 occations: early 1970's and late 1980's.

Good day

Pan Am operated the L1011-500's along with ex-National DC10's.

and Delta operated the DC10 twice, once when their L1011 orders were delayed due the problem at Rolls Royce and then when they acquired Western's DC10's in the late 80's.

How about Hawaiian Air?

As Hawaiian Air was replacing its L1011 fleet with DC-10s, didn't they fly simultaneously together?

Also in the mid 1980s American Trans Air flew DC-10-30s and L1011s at the same time.

Yes Hawaiian did operate both of them at the same time. Forgot about them. The DC10's were first put on routes to LAX while the L10's were operating the flights to SFO.
