Don't mix your facts up.

Atlanta Hartsfield is the world's busiest.

Denver International is the world's biggest in terms of square miles of airport land. Enough to build at least twelve runways! Smokin cool

I thought I read somwhere that in terms of land area, the airport at Riyadh was the larges. If not there, then Jeddah perhaps.
I couldda sworn it was in Saudi Arabia.

Just went to "Northern Light" and entered "Largest Airport" and found this:

Chicago's O'Hare Airport is an interesting place to go. It has a few levels and is very complicated.
This airport is big and will be great for you to visit if you are interested in flying one day.
It offers a great variety of flights all over the world.

O'Hare is the biggest airport in the world. It serves thousands of people each day alone.
It is 7,700 acres of land. It is the place of many jobs and great opportunities.

Thank you Brett for your research.

The largest airport in terms of acres of land is DIA.

The previous record holder was somewhere in the Middle East; I thought it might have been Bahrain.

Actually, the world's 2 largest airports are both in Saudi Arabia. Largest is Riyadh, followed by Jeddah. Jeddah is so huge because a) there are loads of oil storage facilities and b) because it has to deal with the millions of pilgrims to Mecca each year. Riyadh again has loads of oil storage facilities, and is slightly larger than Jeddah.

Are the Saudi Arabian Airports commercial or military though?

The largest airport in the United States is definitely Denver International, the second largest would be Dallas.

I doubt Chicago is even in the top ten in acreage. I had read in a recent article on Airliners news that you could fit 3 O'Hare's inside of Willow Run's YIP (west of DTW) property. A lot of that property is not used right now, but is owned by the airport i guess for future expansion.

OK for the people who are getting mixed up........

#1. King Khalid International, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
225 square km. 55,040 acres.

#2. Abdul-Azzi Airport, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It doesn't say anything about being the second biggest but The Hajj Terminal is the largest terminal in the world to cater for the annual influx of pilgrims.

I thought DFW had the most runways and the most land? I guess DIA has the largest land but I always thought it was DFW for the USA.

Someone PLEASE tell me the importance of "acreage" to an airports stats, outside the need for expansion.
I mean, it is practically USELESS!! As far as I am concerned, DEN's 50 sq. miles (or whatever it is) is an absolute waste.
The real stats are these:
Passenger numbers
Plane movements
Destinations
Airlines
Growth
Facility Amenities
etc. etc. etc......

I have seen this and DWT/ORD Fan is right, and Atlanta is the biggest in that terms. I could make an airport that is 1000 km squared in australia, but who cares if it's all just runways and only 1 terminal with 1 flight daily to syd? I sure as hell dont!

In terms of pax movements and such, yes ATL is the busiest,

But when those movements become too much for the airport to bear, then acreage and land owned become very inportant because the airport will have the ability to expand.

In this case, DEN is the largest airport in the US in terms of acerage, and when push comes to shove, DEN will have no problems adding more runways or terminals. ATL, ORD and DFW will. This gives DIA the upperhand in that respect.

Believe me, DFW will not and does not have a problem expanding.

DTWORD! Fan, your case that growth is one of the few siginifant statistics that determine the size of an airports operations wouldn't be a factor for many airports without room to grow!

I bet LHR wishes it had 50sq miles of land to grow and develop.

From :

How large is DFW Airport?

The Airport covers more than 29.8 square miles; real property consists of 18,076 acres (7,318 hectares). The Airport is situated in the cities of Euless, Grapevine, Irving, and Coppell. DFW Airport is the second largest in the United States and third largest in the world.

How many runways does DFW Airport have?

DFW has seven runways, including five north-south parallel runways and two diagonal runways:

Runway 17L/35R 8,500 x 150 feet
Runway 17C/35C 11,400 x 150 feet
Runway 17R/35L 13,400 x 200 feet
Runway 18L/36R 11,400 x 200 feet
Runway 18R/36L 11,400 x 150 feet
Runway 13L/31R 9,000 x 200 feet
Runway 13R/31L 9,300 x 150 feet

Over the next three years, DFW’s 11,400 foot runways will be extended to 13,400 feet. An eighth 9,560 foot runway is planned for the near future.

What major facilities does DFW Airport have?

The Airport has 127 aircraft boarding gates located within four terminals.
Customs and Immigration facilities for international passenger arrivals are provided in three separate terminals.
Two separate cargo areas serve the airport.
The Hyatt Regency DFW, one of the world’s largest airport hotels, has 1,400 rooms and includes the popular Hyatt Bear Creek Resort and golf course.

True that ATL has the most pax in numbers, but when you fly over DTW in a Cessna 172 and it takes you about 5 minutes just to cross, it seems as if DTW has the largest about of tarmac.

So far people have said that Riyadh is 89 sq miles or 225 sq kms, which is right?

Jeddah is both Civilian and Military, they have a number of C130 sdns based there.

RyanB741, what oil storage facilities are you talking about? Saying that the airport size is needed due to pilgrims is wrong, although the airport land area is huge, the airport facilities are tiny.

EGGD, i sincerely doubt that the Hadj terminal is the biggest in the world regardless of what the Guinness book of records says because they only opened one half of it! The other half just keeps the sun off the sand.
