ATL On Discovery Channel

Mon Feb 26, 2001 7:40 am

Discovery Channel is running a special right now on ATL.

Two points of observation:

1) they've twice mistaken a DL MD-11 for a 737, and remarked that a DL 727 crashed at DFW, when in fact it was an L-1011.

2) One of the Ops Supervisors at ATL that they've had on used to work Ops at MSY.

''they've twice mistaken a DL MD-11 for a 737, and remarked that a DL 727 crashed at DFW, when in fact it was an L-1011.''

Actually, DL1241 was a 727-200 that crashed in Dallas / Ft. Worth in 1989... three years AFTER DL191 - the L-1011 crash. The crash was attributed to a lack of attention by the cockpit crew resulting in a failure to deploy take-off flaps.

And I have no idea why, but here at ERAU on Discovery we have some crap on Vegas hotels..... any idea why? We were told it was satellite and not cable, so why it is I am totally confused - thus I didn't see the program.

They showed a Delta 767 landing safely and taxiing back to the terminal after one of it's engines failed, wonder if it was a GE CF6 powered aircraft.

It was N143DA ship 143 and it is powered by the CF6 engine. DL had a 767-200 lose one on takeoff from SJU, fully loaded on a hot humid day last summer. The flight deck crew luckily had a change of shorts available after landing that plane safely at SJU.....

Heard a rumor that GE CF6s don't cooperate in hot humid weather as good as a P&W 4000 or RR RB211 series engine.

Hey N 8 6 3 D A,

I think you're picking up the West Coast schedule.

We had that Vegas thing on @ 1 (4ET), and the show on the 777 isn't until 4 PST. Try watching at 4 PST (in 11 min.)

777boy,

I think you may be right..... I have no idea why we have a West Coast feed, but it would appear we do...

We're just now getting the 777 program with the American 777-200 featured....

So hopefully we'll get the ATL program next. The downside is that I'll miss the Simpsons as it'll be on at the same time.... (but I'll still get to see X-Files)

I really enjoyed that show about ATL, and the AA 777 one before it was really good too.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Tell me about it. I'm moving off campus in at the end of the semester - can't wait.

I finally saw the program - it was good I guess - gotta love the concentrating on DL - hardly surprising tho... they didn't mention other airlines (including AirTran) once! Oh well.

They didn't mention AirTran, but they did show some shots of AirTran DC-9s. I also noticed the mistake concerning the DFW crash. They said it was a 727, while it clearly showed the tail of the L-1011 that crashed. I was wondering if any of you would catch that. It was a good show, and I saved it on tape.

Both a DL B722(N473DA) and a DL L1011(N726DA) have crashed at DFW.
The 722 crew were not maintaing a sterile cockpit (There are transcripts of this and it's disgusting) and the stall warning was not working.
AA has lost 2 DC10s (nonfatal) @ DFW, too. (N39AA)(N109AA)

Will they rerun the ATL show any time? I only saw like 2 minutes of it at the end, I want to see it again so I can tape it. I looked through the TV guide and it was a bunch of stuff about birth defects for the rest of tonight. I REALLY want to see that, missing it added to my already disappointing weekend  Sad.

Not that it's anything but a nitpick, but the 727-200 that crashed was Delta 1141, on its way to Salt Lake City, and it crashed in 1988, not 1989 (as the voice-over said).

Delta 191, the L-1011, crashed on landing in August, 1985, after encountering a microburst. They did, indeed, show the tail section (and, I believe, footage of the crash aftermath) in the documentary and identified it as, essentially, 1141. I could expect such ridiculous errors from a trashy news program like Dateline, but this is the Discovery Channel we're talking about--you'd think they'd have higher standards.

N202PA is right, that is exactly where they messed up, spoke about the 727 crash but said, "pictured here" and instead showed the 85 tristar microburst crash.

I wish the program would have centered more on the aircraft operational aspect and less on the behind the scenes shuttle bus drivers/customer helpers inside the terminals stuff.

Lately the Discovery Channel has had some good airline stuff on, the 777 story, ATL Behind the Scenes, the air traffic controller behind the scenes, etc.

N863DA:

Thing is, they were showing crash footage from DL 191, which, as you know, was in fact, an L-1011 operating an FLL-DFW nonstop.

Discovery's narrator claimed the L-1011 was a 727.

Does Alaska Airlines fly to ATL? I clearly saw the tail of an Alaska 737 in one scene. It was in the background and you had to look fast, but the tail of an Alaska aircraft is unmistakable.

Yes, I caught those errors as well. And those audio communications between pilots and controllers sounded staged to me.

I caught the AA-777 show by accident and then continued to watch the ATL program. Both were great, I did catch some errors, like mentioned previously. This is the first I've seen "commercial aviation" shows in a LONG-TIME! The Learning Channel puts on some good programs too, like Survival in the Sky.

Discovery had a show on over the summer last year called "The Black Box" or something like that. It was a good show, they talked about the AeroPeru 757 incident off the coast of Peru, and a few others. It was a great show!
