What do you think ??

All I can say is I'm so happy it was a freighter, then again I saw the KE 744's do some very, very bad landings.

For those of you that did not visit Kai Tak this KE 747 was going a tad too fast when he made the turn. The aircraft should not be banking at such a angle.

Following the turn the aircraft lost speed and height before powering up enough to make the runway.

One of the landings I will not forget !!

You know when ever I went spotting at Kai Tak I almost every time met someone that was spotting, taking photos or that loved planes.

At CLK I've only met people like `us' three times since it opened. Its very sad.

One word....memories. I like it when they swoop over the buildings really low.

Nobody has commented on the actual photo in this topic. You should not be doing turns like this at low level in a 747. You can lose a lot of height.

Anyway, yes, the good ole days at Kai Tak.

Oh, I actually felt like crying on the day it closed. KaiTak is part of my childhood memory. It's too sad that I wasn't there in hk on the day it was closed. I always imagined I could have stood on the overpasses at the end of rwy 13 and watched a/c landing there. But no, the only time I could do that was on the upper deck of a bus going on the overpasses.

The opening of CLK was also painful too.

Hmmmm..., for the photo, the KE's a/c could have stalled at this angle. It's lucky that Kowloon city was not smashed by it.

It wouldn't be too dangerous if he knew what he was doing.....but then this is Korean.

Dear me, in 1995 I must be still in the schools in Kowloon City.

Hkgspotter1, I think you met nobody because you weren't in the popular spotting locations. You go to the roof of the police station and... I simply won't go there. and I guess others won't too, as I (and I think others also) prefer shooting at the shortest distance possible.

By the way I had saw your photo in "Farewell Kai Tak" the book.

Ryan,

Sorry. I think you got the wrong idea. I've only been on the roof of the police station three times in total.

My spot is on the rocks near Haeco (07 in use) or on the rocks by 25R if that runway is in use (until they close it that is).

I would like to meet you one of these days as I've seen your posts for some time now and we are always answering each other. I may be there sunday, what about you ?

I remember flying into Kai Tak vividly from the old days.

However, I've only experienced the landing at Kai Tak coming in from land TWICE.  Sad Every time I landed at Kai Tak in a 747 it was always landing from the sea.

However, I have experienced a take off in the landward direction in a 747 though. I remember flying JL 747-200 that way in 1979--you could feel the rapid climb and the hard bank to the left after leaving the runway.

A few years ago I was at the carpark at Kai Tak during a very cold Chinese New Year morning when a Air China 744 took off on runway 31 but instead of turning left after departure he just climbed straigh ahead and into the low clouds !!!. The guy on the tower almost had a heart attack !!. After confirming he was at a safe height they just told him direct to China .
