Flights Between Taiwan And The Koreas

Tue Feb 27, 2001 4:45 am

A korean Newspaper has reported that a travel agency in Taiwan has agreed to sign a contract with a North Korean Travel agency. Under this contract, Taiwan's travel agency will provide a weekly flight between Taipei and Pyongyang, effective April. This travel agency in Taiwan has estimated that there will be 50000 Taiwanese tourists visiting North Korea each year.

P.S. The possible airline will operate this route might be China Airlines, since they had several charters to Pyongyang since 1996.

Meanwhile, Korean Air has stated that they're confident to resume flights to Taipei by the end of the year.

Just wondering, are these reports true? Espcially the Taipei-Pyongyang flight. This was released from Beijing, not Taipei.

I donot think this is true!!
I mean who will want to go to a Poverty striken country with no outside Associations except Russia and maybe South Korea.
North Korea is having a problem with no food being brought into the country.
They must be mad to go to a Communist country!! Like they said, most people who go into a Communist country Never come out!!

Just my opinion.

Cheers

No one would think NK can accept 50,000 foreign tourists. Although weekly (twice?) Beijing-Pyongyang Air Korea is almost full, (JS operates Il62.) it's not due to tourism. In North Korea, tourism is only in Kumgangsan area.

But it's true that KE and OZ want to return to Taipei. Well, it would be easy if both carriers make subs like 'Blah-blah Asia'.

Between Seoul and Taipei, CX and TG are operating daily, both by 777.

It would be quite ironic if the Pyongyang flights started operating before the Seoul flights resumed.

The Taiwanese govt was completely out of their minds to ban air service to/from South Korea in the first place. TG and CX are rolling in cash from flying TPE-SEL.

Political reasons (not the first time.)
Well I think when South Korea terminated official ties with the Republic of China (ie Taiwan), both countries had to stop the direct air route. I think this was in 1992. And the same thing happend to South Africa. Before 1997 South africa and Taiwan has diplomatic ties (ie S Africa recognised Taiwan instead of mainland China), there were direct airlinks serving Taipei and JNB, but when S Africa established ties with mainland China Taiwan and S Africa just stopped the direct airlink. So if you want to go from TPE to JNB you go via HKG or SIN or KUL...

Hope this helps

Another South Korean Newspaper has report that flights between Taipei and Pyongyang will be launched before April 15 (national holiday in N.Korea).

Both China Airlines and Air Koryo (JS) will operate this route bi-weekly. (eg: Week 1 & 3 opb CI, week 2& 4 opb JS)

About 50,000 Taiwanese will be visitng N.Korea each year for either sightseeing or doing investment.

Seems like TPE will be exciting this year. TPE will see AA, JS, Transaero 's a/c in April...

I heard that CI operates A300-600R for their unscheduled charter to Pyonyang since 1996. Wii they still flying AB6 or B738 to Pyongyang?

Air Koryo will fly IL62 for sure.
