Charleroi Is The FR Hub

Tue Feb 27, 2001 6:31 pm

It has now been officially announced that Charleroi is to be the Ryanair European base. They will start the new routes from 29th April.

They have been quoted in the press as wanting to kill Sabena. With four airlines objecting to the new equity injection into SN, SR saying that they could operate without SN, it would seem bleak for the Belgian carrier at the moment.

This is what people thought would happen when Virgin started at BRU, i.e. SN's homebase. Yet Sabena's current problems were not caused by the competition with VEX, in fact, more people are flying Sabena than ever before. The current situation at sabena was caused by bad management. The one who, in my opinion, should really worry, is VEX, as they are not doing too well either, and they are in direct competition with Ryanair.

Juul is right...the real danger coud come if SAir-group
decides to get out of SN business in a midterm period
because the Belgian State couldn't itself save the
company as opposed to EU regulations! (By the way, if
the French government helps its farmers while it's
forbidden by the EU laws, I don't see the point why
Belgium couldn't help one of its last symbols...even if this solution doesn't guaranty the survival of the airline in a long term period)!

I remember hearing a rumour that VEX is going to lose all of the Sabena contracts (LHR, FCO etc) and the operation was to be handed over to Crossair. In terms of passenger service, that would improve things greatly. However, I have not heard much of this plan lately. Perhaps SAir's problems prevent this for the time being.

There are several possibilities for better solutions to the SN flights currently performed by TV. Several are being looked into, as well. For instance, it was recently in the news that a number of ex-Air Belgium employees might be starting up the airline again and perform flights for SN. As I said; for instance...

Best regards,
