VS To Australia: Confirmed?

Wed Feb 28, 2001 3:05 am

I was at an air catering trade fair (IFCA) in Barcelona last week and as part of the show I got to speak to many airline executives  Smile

One piece of information I was told by a Virgin Atlantic director was that it was confirmed that VS would serve Australia in the near future with the Alitalia 744s they have got hold of. The service would be via SIN and would go to SYD, possibly also BNE.

Another thing I heard: STRONG hints from LH about a return downunder but that's all I got out of the person I spoke to.

Branson has always wanted to fly there, and since VS are such a long-haul orientated airline I think it'd be a natural one for them, even if fares are already the cheapest per mile in the world. 25 hours each way for £500 return on most airlines? It's about £10 per hour. Virgin Atlantic would benefit because they can feed pax into Virgin Blue. Although...SQ are the dominant airline on the route (other than the two who are based either at the origin or destination - QF and BA) and VS are 49% owned by SQ. Surely SQ would object, since it is an unnecessary duplication of routes? Then again, VS have all the trans-Atlantic routes from LHR anyone could want, but want their own LHR-JFK license.

Airline economics, phhhhhhttt!

SQ would probably love VS to do LHR/SIN/SYD it would give them a chance to put together a code share on the route. SQ are looking at ways to boost capacity to SYD but at present do not have the resources this would be one easy way for them.
As for feeling sorry for QF don't they are doing quite well, still making money but like most profit orientated companies are quite prepared to make cuts to ensure that the profits increase, even at the expense of long served routes.

My understanding was SQ would prefer its associates such as NZ/AN and VS serve routes that increase the SQ presence on routes which SQ cannot serve due to bilateral restrictions. With this in mind I would have thought SQ would have preferred VS to route its Australian service through an Asian port other than SIN. Just like SQ is happy that AN eventually serve London but prefers it does so via Hong Kong rather than SIN.

I had heard from several VS f/as that they were preparing to begin a LHR-KUL-SYD service with their own aircraft and not code-share with Malaysia Airlines but have stumbled on some bureaucratic matters. With BA leaving KUL there have been some new developments but no one seems to have much information for now.
