KLM B747-200SUDs

Wed Feb 28, 2001 1:15 pm

Just a few question regarding KLM's 747SUD's

# How many of KLM 747-200 were converted to SUD?
# Are they still in service (both, the freighter and passenger version)?
# In general, how can you differentiate between B747-300 and B747-100/200 with SUD modification?
# In adding the SUD kit, will it effect the performance of the airplane (range, payload, etc), other that increasing gross weight and capacity ?

I thought 742SUDs are just the same as 743. I thought that the only diff. is that is built w/ bigger upper deck while SUD is converted.

hmm... I don't know too much, but I did have a 1:200 model KLM SUD in early 90s. I don't have it anymore.

p.s. SUD has slightly higher econ. cruising speed. from .84 to .85.

Thx to all for the replies.

Red Panda: How come the SUD has higher econ. cruising speed than -300?? I thought both are similar in aerodynamic design..... Do correct me if I'm wrong

Answer to your second question:
PH-BUI and PH-BUH are freighters flying for KLM Cargo, if I'm not mistaken the PH-BUK will be retired this year (I think around April) as KLM will receive additional B747-400s. All others are still in service.

Answer to question three: virtually impossible (it's that I know which ones are SUD and which not)

As for the last question. Because the PH-BUI and PH-BUH are SUD, the payload as a freighter is less than a normal (converted) B747-200.

Some people think (but i asked the photographer of the photo below and couldn't affirm it) that the PH-BUK will be sold. The photo below has as its remark that the plane will be sold.
Don't know what is true...
