Twa Service To Lisbon On 757

Wed Apr 28, 1999 10:40 am

Has anyone ever flown on TWAs' 757-200I to LIS or to any destination on a TWA 757 in international configuration? What was the service like? and How comfortable were the seats?

Thanks,
Lance

I have never flown it and hope to never need.
A 7hrs flight is already much...but in a narrow-body...and over the Atlantic!? No, thanks!
I'd prefer TAP's A310-300.

p.s.:CO is also flying 752s to Lisbon.

I flew a TWA 752 to Barcelona last April in Business Class. The seats were wide in the typical B-Class fashion but they had no footrest. This was very dissapointing after a long multi-city Asian tour on UA, Thai, Garuda, and SA B-Class seats.

This is my least favorite airliner in terms of comfort, but I'll take its safety record and TWA's pilot training requirements any day over a TAP A310. No offense intended, just going by stats and airline pilot recommendations.

Could you be more specific comparing TWA safety record and pilot training requirements with TAP.
TAP pilots and security is as normal as any airline in the world.
Many airlines in the world bring their planes for maintenance at TAP facilities in Lisbon.

Again, no offense intended. Safety stats for the 757 are among the highest in the industry, much better than the A310. Check out the stats in airdisaster.com.

I can't speak specifically about TAP pilots, but the pilots I have known in my life (TWA Capt. retired, KLM FO on 737, 744, and MD-11) have always told me that training requirements are not as stringent as US and Northern Euro reqs. I know Iberia quite well and the right family connections can often get you in over qualifications. I've heard the same for Latin American airlines as well. Perhaps a cultural difference. And don't get too crazy on me, I grew up in Spain so I do have some definite first hand knowledge.

White Knuckles,
That is the craziest thing I've ever heard! Of course TAP is safe, its saftey records are fine! Not every airline can have a record like Quantas does and most airlines in US have records that compare very well to TAP's!! Most of the A310 crashes were the pilot's fault anyway! What kind of reasoning is that for choosing a TWA 757 over a TAP A310, considering you already said TWA's service was not that good. You used this kind of screwed up logic before when you told us about your extreme hatred for Airbus. Don't give us another weird answer using your psudo-logic to cover up for your stubborn opinions in aviation!!

uh, I don't mean to but in, but does anyone have any info on the subject I actually posted? (TWA international service especially on the 757-200I) If not just ignore this and go on tossing barbs at one another.

Thanks,
Lance

Sorry Lance, I just would like to say this:

White Knuckles, don't worry, I know you don't want to offend anyone. I don't agree with you but that's your opinion, it's ok.

It's true there are a cultural difference between south Europe and north Europe, but when it comes to safety in aviation, NO airline wants their planes to have accidents. I can tell you TAP is between the safest airlines in the world. It's not noticed because it's a small airline. TAP pilots are so professional as any other european pilots. Recently, french airline AOM after an agreament (spelling?) with TAP had 4 pilots in formation on TAP A340's. We're not playing games with flying machines.

Once again, sorry Lance for deviating the main topic.

The trafffic on the JFK-LIS route does not have traffic numbers to warrent a 767.

Nicely said Mirage!! Some of the worlds airlines really are not safe and have pilots who are not professional. TAP is certainly not one of those! As an aviation enthusiast I would have to be blind to see TAP in that category. This is not a matter for discussion; it is a simple fact.

Damn its hard to post opinion here. To the original question, TWA's service is average. Their B-Class service is inferior due to reasons in first response.

About TAP, I have no hard facts. But a statistical comparison between the two planes shows a difference in favor of the 757. Safety records kept by the FAA and its international counterparts show a clear difference in safety stats between regions of the world. Europe, NA, and and Australasia are ranked highest. Asia, LA, and Africa at the bottom. This is fact. My post about southern European pilots is based on my opinion as developed from insider's opinions. Perhaps TAP is completely different from IBERIA, but I was opinionating.

And MEB, I don't hate Airbus. They make some nice jets, but I truly beileve they compete with an unfair advantage. Previous comments about the French are meant to be provocative. That's what this is about right? Or are we all just here to agree with everything and not really talk about sensitive issues. This Boeing vs. Airbus thing will dominate aviation talk for the foreseeable future so get used to it.

Finally, see how many posts we got going on something so mundane as TWA service to Lisbon?

Ok, I am apologizing, even if I have not offend you, I have made the atmosphere here a little aggressive. How about we just forget about all this and debate again when we have another disagreement.

No need to apologize. Besides, now I can't find these damn stats. I think airdisaster changed its format. And I shouldn't get cranked up either. My fascination for this airplane stuff is distracting me from a serious full-time job. Until my big mouth finds us in yet another disagreement, happy trails.

psssst! go boeing!

Since we have just gone way the heck off the subject, What is there to do in Lisbon when traveling there?

I'm sure you'll find something to do, don't worry. The city is beautiful and I'm not saying this because I'm portuguese.
BTW, if you travel 300 Km south you'll be here in sunny Algarve with the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

Just a little promotion, he he.
