Delta MD11 & Dosmetic Flights

Thu Apr 29, 1999 12:41 am

Hi :

Delta cut its service by MD-11 for all the dosmetic flights within the U.S. Does anybody know why ? It used to have MD-11 fly between ATL-LAX but not anymore.

Thanks ...

I believe the ATL-LAX MD-11 flight was a portion of an Asian flight route that has now been dropped. Does anyone else have any info? Chris

Could it also be so that DL can put in the BusinessElite cabin?? And then...fly those planes directly to Europe or Asia????

Delta dropped its MD11 service between ATL and LAX long before its planes were ever refurbished with the BusinessElite cabin so that could not be the reason.
I think the ATL-LAX service went on HKG as Chris thought it was the first leg of a canceled Asian route. Delta stopped service to HKG from LAX, which was its only HKG route. If I am right that the ATL-LAX route was the first leg on the flight to HKG it is not surprising that the ATL-LAX service is no longer existent.

I heard on the news that the FAA is inspecting the MD-11's because of last year's Swissair crash. Evidently they have found a number of problems with the MD-11 and Delta decided to remove them from their service.
If anyone has a correction to this, let me know.

That can't be right--they still fly them on international routes. I know that they use them form Athens to JFK, for example. Where did you get the info re the withdrawn from service because of safety?

Leon is right, Delta has not withdrawn their MD11s from service and if they did they would have nothing to replace them with. The problems that have been found with the MD11s are very minor. That idea is crazy.

One of my pilot friends says he heard through an ALPA buddy that Delta closed out their MD-11 LAX pilot base last month. He says they are now flying out of Portland (PDX) and Atlanta (ATL) to their Asian destinations. Example: (MD-11) DL #137 - ATL - PDX - FUK (Fukuoka, Japan).

Right out of a timetable (which expired on 4/3/99), Delta flies MD-11's:

ATL-LGW
LGW-ATL
ATL-FRA
FRA-ATL
SEL-PDX
CVG-PDX
PDX-CVG
PDX-NRT
NRT-PDX
ATL-NRT
NRT-ATL
PDX-SEL
NGO-PDX
PDX-NGO
FUK-PDX
PDX-FUK

The X-Pacific flights are the ones equipped with the crew rest compartments that have recently been complained about by their pilots. They have 15 MD-11's, and the word I heard is that the recent ADs are special, one time inspection ADs and would simply be scheduled to be performed in their regular overnight mtc checks, with no disruption of service to perform them, as long as no problems are found.

What about their LAX-NRT flight? On the Delta web site it says that the flight is scheduled with a MD11?

You're right, MEB!

I went over and checked too, and that flight (#79; LAX-NRT) does still come up as an MD-11?! Well, all I can say is the info I posted above was what the guy told me. It was also shown in the timetable I quoted the other routes from, but since he had said that LAX pilot base was closed out and that route was due to be terminated, AND my timetable expired on 4/3, I didn't include it....I dunno. I guess maybe someone could call them (reservations?) and see if they have any info on it.
