AMR's American Gets Restraining Order Against Mechanics

New York, March 1 (Bloomberg) -- AMR Corp.'s American Airlines, the second-largest U.S. carrier, said it won a temporary restraining order to keep its mechanics union from disrupting flights at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Judge Nina Gershon, of the Eastern District of New York, Brooklyn, at a hearing today ordered the Transport Workers Union to have its Local 562 members stop any job actions that cause flight delays and disrupt schedules at the airport.

American said in a press release distributed by PR Newswire that the judge also ordered the union, which represents about 31,000 mechanics, fleet service clerks, and other employees at carrier, to ensure its members don't take any further action.

Officials at American didn't return calls seeking comment.

The carrier said earlier that its flights at JFK were back on schedule of 3:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. American canceled 35 of its 39 flights this morning at Kennedy after scrapping most flights at Kennedy on Wednesday, when the slowdown began.

The carrier also had disruptions at LaGuardia Airport today, although was unable to confirm if these were related to the job action at Kennedy.

The mechanics have been negotiating a new contract with the airline. American said it began contract talks with the union in October, and the slowdown occurred after union officials detailed for workers at Kennedy a comprehensive contract proposal.

Shares in AMR Corp., American's parent company, which is based in Forth Worth, Texas, fell $1.93 to $31.32.
