They had tristars a while ago, but got rid of them in favor of the DC10. My guess to a replacement for the ten's is the 767-300, either leased or from American.

If HA needs to replace their D10 fleet, they have two planes they can choose from: 767-400ER or 777-200.

I think HA may choose the 777-200 configured similarly to the "two class" setup on some UA 777-200's, and they will be primarily used on HNL-SFO/SEA/LAX flights and flights to some other Pacific islands.

Not much new has come out, though I have heard that 767-200s from American are unlikely.

Who are you kidding ... HA with 777s ... hahahaha! NOT! HA does not have the capital to lease/purchase 777s, let alone maintain them. If anything, they'd lease AA's older 767-200s/300s, especially since AA already does all the maintenance on their widebody aircraft.

Continental does the maintenance on the three DC-10-30s Hawaiian leased from CO.

Folks,

I think you ARE forgetting that the DC-10's HA flies does carry a bit more pax than a 767-300, so replacing them with 767-300's from AA may not be such a good idea. Especially when you consider that AA is hanging onto their 762/763 fleet for USA transcon, trans-Atlantic and Latin American flights, so ex-AA 763's for HA are kind of unlikely.

I still think HA getting the "two class" 777-200 is not far-fetched, especially if they can do a long-term lease on them from ILFC, GECAS or Boeing's own lease company. You do forget that flights to Hawaii really need the capacity almost year-round.

I agree with RayChuang,

The "two-class" 777 in HA colors is possible especially with the rivalry between Boeing and Airbus with the 777 and A330 respectively. Both companies would deffinently do some heavy marketing and negotiating to HA to win an order no matter how large the order is: Airbus to get the A330 further into the trans-pac market that UA and HA dominate and Boeing to keep HA as a "Boeing only" customer like CO. I personally hope that HA goes for the 777. A 777 in HA colors would look beautiful flying into HNL on a bright sunny day.

This is a difficult topic.

Hawaiian is not cash rich, far from it.This is why HA plan to keep the DC-10's for several years yet.

It may well come down to how cheap they can get a large widebody jet.

It's anyones game.

remember that Hawiian does own a couple of the DC-10s used on the Tahiti-LAX service. As for replacements, i won't expect anything new in the near future...I think their priority is the 717 and getting all of them into interisland service abd returning the DC-9s to their owners. AA is giving HA a good deal...but even UA could be a potenetial lessor if the price is right. Seeing how their long-haul plan is working and their goals about being one of the top carriers in the Hawai'i-West Coast Market...i would expect something that is similar to the current fleet in terms of seating capacity...but until they make an announcement...all i am doing is shooting the bull.

Does anybody know if Hawaiian Airlines has considered used MD-11s, 747s or A340s?

Hawaiian Airlines liveries would look great on these aircraft.

Spoke with a f/a on HA who flies the SEA-HNL route. She said the company wants to replace the DC-10s soon, as early as end of 2001 if the price is right. This plane also has to be able to fly the charter routes for Renaissance Cruises, primarily LAX to Tahiti and East Coast to Europe. The 767-300 ER is the most likely candidate, as they can lease them. 767-400, 777, and A330 were considered. However, 767-400 are not readily available and may not be able to fly LAX-Tahiti under strong headwind conditions. 767-400 LR is not yet built. 777 and 330 are a bit too big, as their flights are usually 70-75% full. 767-300 ER is a slightly smaller plane, but she stated that they can modify the plane--ie take out coat closets for seats, which they have done on their DC-10s, and make the leg rooms smaller.

The part about not being able to make LAX-PPT is frankly bullsh1t.

LAX-PPT is 4095 miles.

ATL-HNL is 4502 miles.

The 767-400ER can make ATL-HNL no problem, year round... and that is a route notorious for nasty headwinds.

I don't know where people get the idea of the 767-400 being an underperformer, but it's simply not true.

777ka,

Hawaiian Air had to replace its TriStar aircraft by DC-10 when American Airlines took control of the airline (it has not been a HAL decision). As a conclusion, I would expect American Airlines to decide when Hawaiian Air gets replacement for the DC-10 fleet. It will probably be AA equipment, i.e. B767-300 (most likely).

AA does not control HA. HA is still a publicly traded company that has an extensive marketing agreement and partnership with AA. HA got rid of the L-1011's due to corrosion problems and a poor financial situation leading up to bankruptcy in the mid 1990's. The DC-10's came into HA when the company's financial situation improved and when the partnership with AA began. They got a very good lease terms for the DC-10's from AA that they just about couldn't refuse.

AA has no control over HA.

I would suggest secondhand MD11s for HA.
