Why No EI DUB-YYZ?

Tue Mar 06, 2001 12:53 am

Does anyone know why Aer Lingus hasn't developed any Canadian routes, to perhaps YYZ or YUL? I'd imagine there is a decent market for it...

I think it relates to the fact that they cannot get landing rights a YYZ. Years ago YYZ was off limits because of the requirements that any Canadian carrier flying into DUB had to stop over at Shannon. Aer Lingus used to stop over at Dorval on the Chicago run but that was back in the 707 days.
I have no memory of this place.

Yes, it's quite correct to say that bilateral considerations work against it; the current bilateral dates back to 1948 and it is very archaic; imagine having a bilateral that pre-dates the jet age. There are currently charters operated by Air transat and Skybus, but until the bilateral is straightened out and the Irish government begins to take an interest in this issue, there'll be no movement.

I have no doubt that EI wants to fly to YYZ and I'm sure either C3000 or AC would reciprocate.
