Wish we still had those (I think they are China Air since late 70's)but since they are 4 engines we got rid of them. I heard a rumor they wanted to do ATL-Inchon in 747's for KE.

I have been on America West's 747 from PHX-HNL and HNL-LAS. At the time I was young so it didn't impress me at the time but now it will be remembered as one of those oddities in aviation history.

Delta and America used to have 747's. If you search for them here, then you can see the pictures of them.

Go Delta,

Where did you hear that Delta was going to do 747s ATL-ICN?

KE already does a 744 from ATL-SEL (soon ICN) via DFW. Would this be in addition to this flight or a replacement?

KE has 747's in ATL? I thought the only 747's in ATL were South African. I just heard a rumour about it, nothing serious. If they do do that it will probably be 777.

Go Delta -

Yes, KE has been running 744s into ATL since 1994, first to Seoul via ORD and now DFW (I would expect them to start a SEL-ATL nonstop once ICN opens and DL resumes their codeshare agreement). Air France switches to 744s with the summer schedule. These and SAA are the only scheduled pax 747s into ATL (but dont' forget all the 747F operators in ATL though - CI, KE, Alitalia, Polar, LH, JL, AF, Martinair...). I kind of figured BA would also run 744s this summer, as they are apparently not flying twice a day between ATL-LGW as they did last summer. But last I checked BA is sticking with just one 777 flight.

I'd love to see DL operate 747-400s, but I really doubt it will happen. DLs long term fleet plans are all about Boeing twins. I think DL could have gone with 744s instead of the MD-11. There was obviously concern that 747s were too big for DL's pax traffic, but I think they could have operated them as combis and made a killing hauling cargo & pax to FRA, NRT, LGW, GRU...etc. But right now, the highest capacity plane DL operates is the old Trisaurus (L-1011) with up to 302 seats. The 764s and 777s that are replacing them have fewer seats! I guess this illustrates that DL has little interest in high capacity planes. The A380 is right out, that's a no brainer!

Yes, I guess you are right. I swear I thought only SA used 747's in ATL. I once saw a Lufthansa 4 engine from a distance but I thought it was an A340. BA had twice daily to ATL? Why do people go to Atlanta (except to get DL connections)? I could see JFK or LAX but ATL?

You have to be there on a Tuesday or Friday evening to catch KE's 744s in ATL. KE 35 arrives about 9:30 pm and KE 36 leaves at 11:20. On Friday the 13th (gasp!) it will leave with me on it....

I was on an America West 747 between PHX and LAS once a long time ago. It's funny on the return to Tucson I was on an original "America West operated" Dash 8.

Desk driver I've been on CO 747-100s twice and DL 747 5 times. Gee I guess I was flying in an imaginary airplane. I could've sworn as a kid I saw a hump on top with spiril stairs going up to where the first class and the flight deck is. The plane that you claim that the two airlines did not have also had two engines on each wing. Smooth move deskdriver!!! Next time you rookies should try using the search feature on the main page. It's quite helpful.

Virgin A340. The reason I ask, is that I thought DL got rid of their 747's in 1977. Based on your profile, you would have still been in diapers if you had flown on a DL 747, though maybe at that age, flying 5 times on a DL 747 would make a big impression on a toddler.

Delta may be the most travelled airline in the world, on an annual basis, but they do not have any routes with high enough density to utilize the 744. The 777 works just fine for their long range routes, perfect capacity, and range, coupled with one heck of a great airplane!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy That's not to say that I don't like 744s. But 777s are my favorite widebody!

My mother's mother (my grandma) flew once ORD-ATL on Delta 747. I told her that's not true. I checked her ticket and check my Delta timetable. She was right! She flew 747 once! It was during lates 70's. I never saw a real plane Delta 747. I just flew Delta first time was 1978 or 1979. Delta just pulled out all 747 that time. Oh well...

I was wrong I took it as present day, I was unaware that you meant the past. I did say "it does'nt exist" not "it never existed" but i conceed I never knew they had . So you learn something everyday. So can we get back to the original question, who has been on the aforementioned 747's

I appologise once again pilotallen .

Why do you think some of the DL 747 seats are on JM's 310's now.

Basically a guy told me. But I think he new what he was talking about. I was on a JM flight last summer, MBJ-JFK, and a guy pointed to the 1st class seats and told me "those used to be on DL 747's".

RE: Anyone Been On The Delta 747? I Have!

Yes! I have. In 1971, my family and I were travelling from Canada to South America. We were at the travel agent making the arrangements and my dad let me make the decision between these choices...a Delta 747 from SFO to DAL connecting to an EAL 727-100 to MIA, or a 1-stop National DC-10 from SFO to MIA. I wanted to fly on both, but I HAD to go for the 747 option. Our Delta 747 flight was great! Mid-afternoon, about 1/3 full. I can still remember how nice the flight attendants were to my brother and myself.

Yeah...was on DL 747 back in mid 70's from Dallas to Las Vegas, I believe. Does that sound right? I'm sure of the aircraft...just not the route.
I was surprised too. It was back when there were only 9 seats across in coach...3-4-2.

PHL Flyer; I don't remember much but thanks to my parents and my dad's camera (as well as my parent's description of the plane) he was taking shots on-board. My dad travelled basically everywhere with DL to visit relatives and a bit of business traveling so usually he'd take my mom and myself along for the ride. This was the same year DL got ride of the 747s.

Delta 747s used to operate into London-Heathrow in the mid 1970's. I saw N9898 at LHR in 1975.

RE: Go Delta And 747 Stuff.....

Thu Mar 08, 2001 9:26 am

Go Delta......The first class seats on JM 310's were the former Business class seats used on DL 310's. I know that because I helped reconfigure the cabins....The only exception being the JM 310's used for the LHR route, which had new first class seats from Weber Aircraft.

I have seen photos of DL 747's at work....The upper deck had a wall dividing the left and right sides of the upper deck. The left side was a large stateroom that could be reserved....The sidewalls had silhouettes of flowering trees on them, similar to the bulkheads on the DL 767's from the '80's. And worst of all......No Video at all.......That would really suck on that Pan Am interchange to LHR or FRA.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Sorry, Pendrilsaint I meant no disrespect. I just thought if I was a German family and I wanted to go to the USA for vacation where would I go? Probably MCO, LAX, JFK, SFO, IAD or something like that. I probably wouldn't think of going to ATL.
