Cathay Pacific flies a daily Boeing 747-400 into New York's JFK airport from Vancouver, British Columbia, continuing on from Hong Kong, China.

Yes, you can book the flight. It's flight 889/888.

Be aware that last time i priced that flight i was quoted at over $900US. I had expected it to be cheaper since many of the competitors were around the $350US level. Might as well just buy CX's all Asia pass and continue onward from YVR if you want to give CX a try.

I saw YVR-JFK on CX for $300 US and change on expedia.com. Not a bad price.

You can buy a return YVR-JFK for about $350, subject to 1 week advance purchase and 30 day validity.

Yes, it's really not a bad price.
Believe that only available in U.S. (with fifth freedom).
Other side in Hong Kong.I had quoted a ticket for HKG<-->TPE at the travelling agency(I think it should be the cheapest way).
The result.......HK$3000!!!! wow! what's the hell.
Eva Air just as cheaper as 1700. A reasonable price.
Cathay is the most expensive but not the best. But of course, they are so good.

The guys at Cathay sell one of the most expensive tickets out there in the industry. However, in return for the price you get quality service.

I have not flown them as far as I remember (but I'm sure I did once, that's when I was around 2 years old to Penang? or Cebu), but according to the comments from the flying public here, the comments on the SERVICE are quite positive. Of course that's what you pay for.

It depends where you are buying the ticket from. My aunt in Australia bought a ticket on CX to HKG for just $999AUD! The price on QF and SQ are more or less the same. CX sell much cheaper tickets at anywhere in the world except Hong Kong.

There has been plenty of talk about a HKG-JFK direct flight. It looks at though we are going to start this route, although only because CO and UA are doing it. The A340-300 will probably be flown on the route in addition to the YVR-JFK flight that currently flies daily. This is because CX888/889 are very popular with the locals in the US and Canada so will likely be continued.

Some flights are very expensive on Cathay, but people are willing to pay, as the load factors on our flights are very high at the moment. As long as there are passengers, the price won't drop. Simple economics really.

Cathay's 777-200s are very early models (Including msn no. 1) and do not have the range.

I have also heard that Cathay are not too keep on flying a twin engined aircraft in the middle of the sea..........they might have a point.

CX flyboy,

It'll be interesting to see how CX configures a few of their A340-300E's to fly HKG-JFK non-stop. Will they have to put in additional fuel tanks (and sacrifice some cargo capacity) to fly this route non-stop? This will end up being the longest-scheduled flight for an A340 plane, that's to be sure.

I don't think that Cathay are planning on putting extra fuel tanks in the aircraft, but they would certainly be zero fuel weight limited and possibly pax load limited. However, I don't know all the details as I don't fly the airbus, so all the discussion happens over there and not in my cockpit!!!
