(Original text)

(My (abridged) transaltion)

The article states that the flight to China is to be cancelled and two weekly flights to New York and one to Toronto are to be included in ther summer time table (starting March 25th). Apparently JAT is looking for a US partner to take connecting passengers on to other destinations in the US. Also, the flights between Belgarde and Europe are to increased. Low yield flights are to be "merged" (one plane stopping off at two cities to fill up the plane). There is a bunch of other stuff in the article but I am too lazy to translate that.

RE: Question For JAT

Wed Mar 07, 2001 11:23 am

Not really related to this article, but something that has been bugging me.

At a very young age (5 yrs old, in 1985), I remember looking out the airplane window at night at the airport as the passengers were being loaded. The first airplane that I remember seeing was a JAT DC-10. So my question is how long were the pervious service to YYZ established, and how frequent were the services?

Thanks.

I remember DTW service, I used it in '82 and '87 (DC-10), there was a stop though in Zagreb (?). Then in '82 my connecting flights were DC-9, and in '87 was both the 727 and a brand new 737 (so they said).

Everyone I know now uses MGX Montenegro Airlines instead. I used MGX in '98 on their F28. I've read in WAFN they have two F-100s now instead of the 28s, may be using them this summer.

I quote from JAT's site:

"Gradually, along with the expansion of its long-range fleet, regular flights were added to the timetable. To Australia and the Far East: Karachi-Singapore-Sidney, to Baghdad and Malta (1975), to USSR - Moscow and the US - New York (1976), Damascus and Kuwait, Lion and Madrid (1977), Canada (1984)...
Starting in 1978, JAT gradually purchased three wide body DC-10 jetliners and thus greatly accelerated the development of its intercontinental traffic. Only ten years later on the North American market JAT had a daily flight to New York, four flights a week to Chicago, one weekly flight to Detroit and Cleveland, two flights to Los Angeles and three weekly flights to Montreal and Toronto. In its record years, before the introduction of UN sanctions, JAT had regular flights from Yugoslavia to 61 destinations on five different continents, serving the needs of 4.5 million passengers and 43 thousand tons of cargo annually."

The last flight was in 1992 so, I guess that would make it 8 years of service before a sad end in the summer of 1992.

If you are interested in JAT there is a lot of info on their site about their histroy, it may be a bad site but the info is there.

Anyway, I am glad JAT will be a visitor at YYZ again, athlough it is going to be a bitter-sweet event for me. When I see their lone DC-10 (YU-AMB) I will think of their past glory when they where a truly glonal airline and the best in Eastern Europe. But, after some day-dreaming I suppose I will settle into reality and realize what a sad affair a single, old and rickety (and most likley very dirty) DC-10 is when it compromises the whole of your long range fleet while you try to re-build your international service.........

Dont worry JAT, as the words of the song go, "things can only get better" for the airline now. Im sure that under good management, they will soon be expanding their services as the economy slowly recovers and people from th US start visiting their relatives again. Before you know it they'll be ordering A340/330s!

Allan, they're still miles away from "good management".

Last year's earning figures vary significantly depending on whom you talk to -- syndicates claim $20M loss, the management claims earnings. All transactions on aircraft leases were channeled thru London office that has been controlled by Milosevic's cronnies, and even JAT's CEO himself is facing investigations.

In my estimate, JAT will be in no position to renew its wide body fleet in this decade; single remaining YU-AMB DC-10-30 is too large, old and expensive to operate, but they have no other choice than to keep it, under the pressure of flight engineers' syndicate.

The only reasonable solution I can see for JAT is to lease B762s on per need bases.

Another smart choice would be ordering B757-300s for long haul services, but that is too much forward thinking for the 'old school of thought' in JAT.

I remember seeing a JAT DC10 parked next to my Cathay 747 at Sydney in April 1992. It must have been one of their last flights down under - I remember being surprised to see it cos the troubles had already kicked off big time in former Yuogslavia.

Didn't the JAT CEO get assassinated last year?

Yes, Zika Petrovic was assasinated last year, he was replaced by the current CEO Mihaijlo Vujinovic. I hope the new Serbain governement will replace JAT's management with one the better one. The attitude right now is "it's not my company, I don't care what happens as long as I get paid". Also, a new privatization law should take effect by April and come into effect in early May. Among other things, about 100 "strategic" companies are to be privatize by the government (the other 10,000 or so will be privatized by the management of the company). I have a feeling that JAT is one of those "strategic" companies, so we may see some action on that front.

Also, according to most public reports the A-319 order may be scaled down to A-318 or cancelled altogether and they may go for Boeing. Whatever happens, just not the A-319, I hope.

Wrong size. They need replacement for 100 and 170 seaters. A319 order was political decesion outside JAT, and it is not very difficult to guess its origin.

Another word on current CEO - he has spent his lifetime employment with JAT, meaning climbed corporate ladder in the corporate culture that neglected motivation and awarded those who never challanged "the way things have allways been". He is big part of the problem.

I have no problem with the A-319 it is jsut that JAT does not need it. They already have a plane in that category, the B-737-300.

As KUGN said, they need something to replace the DC-9 and 727. THe 737s are still good and don't need replacement.
