B777/A340 Passenger Survey Results

Wed Mar 07, 2001 5:56 pm

Am I the only person surprised by the fact that "The Boeing 777 continues to overwhelm the A340 in passenger-preference surveys"? I realise this is the outcome of a survey commissioned by Boeing but is it really that simple?

I have taken a number of flights on both the 777 and 340 with a number of different operators and feel that the 340 is a vastly superior plane in terms of the passenger comfort. The seats, configuration, facilities, cabin noise and in particular the quality of flight (incredibly smooth through takeoff, landing and throughout the flight) provide what I can only describe as a near perfect flying experience.

I am not looking at this from the technical view point and believe that the 777 is a truly awesome plane and in some ways superior to the 340, but in terms of passenger comfort and the Boeing survey I feel the 340 is the most comfortable plane in the sky.

Sadly I have not seen the questions upon which this survey is based and suspect that they are not that clear. I also suspect that the manufacturer is more influential than the aircraft type and that people simply favour Boeing over Airbus. In my experience the majority of people are blissfully unaware of the aircraft type they have flown on.

Am I missing something?

What you are missing is not realizing the source. Of course Boeing survey will find pax prefer their products. If you go to Airbus website, they claim that passengers prefer their cabin by an overwhelming margin. Its all spin and no truth. Both the A340 and 777 are great aircraft.

I´ve only been once on both aircraft (LH/BA). I liked the flight in the A340 better, but that was also because the 777-flight was "bumpy", the A340-flight perfectly smooth. The only thing I like on a 777 more is that it has the best interior design of all aircraft. Otherwise I tend to the A340, especially because of it being a Quad.

Statistics lie. The Boeing and Airbus surveys regarding these two aircraft proof that perfectly.

I'd say that app. 90% of my satisfaction with a flight are dependent on
- seat pitch
- ergonomics of seats
- onboard entertainment
- food quality
- friendliness of service
- punctuality
- general condition of the interior (I remember an AA B727 from JFK to MIA. Interior was very worn and dirty. Lavs. sent an intoxicating odour throughout the, well, plane).

so the differences that are due to AC type will be overshadowed in allmost every case by those factors mentioned above. Thus, I suspect that results in surveys comparing AC types are mostly random. Differences will be caused by other factors. Most importantly, there may be a correlation between AC type and airline that operates it.

For example, if you compare A340 and B777 you will likely enter LH as major A340 operator and BA as a major 777 operator. BUT they also differ with respect to all the other factors mentioned above, most probably leading to more satisfaction with the 777.

Oh, no. Statistics never lie. But liars use statistics!  Big grin

I tend to agree with Rabenschlag's take on passenger satisfaction. The type of plane really doesn't matter that much these days, especially when comparing two new aircraft, like the A340 and 777.

RE: B777/A340 Real Independant Survey

I would like to know if a real independant survey, ordered by a mag. and not by a manufacturer is available concerning the preferences of the PAX.

Not likely, as most pax couldn't give a rat's *** what a/c they're flying (if they even know the difference).

As mentioned, all that conerns the Business pax is punctuality, space/comfort and service.

Rabenschlag hit the nail on the head. Re-read his post!

Hum....I prefer B777 more than A340.
As I honestly feel the comfort of B777 is more than A340.
I have flown only on A340 but never on 330 (believe thy are very similar of the cabin config).
I felt a bit narrow. And the leg room is really shorter than B777's.
I have flown on Thai's, Cathay Pacific's and Singapore's B777.
All of them are great! But thai put 10 seat per row in the 777...... Sad
For A340/330. I will not choose again the window seat. I have flown twice on 340, both of them were sitting on the window Maybe just my feeling but soem of friend feel that as well.

And I will concern the cruising speed of A340-200/300s.

In my opinion, the big problem with the A330/A340 is the fact the overhead bins really cut down on the headroom on the window seats. Airbus is aware of this and is completely redesigning the overhead bins on the A340-500/600 series so there is much more headroom for the window seat passengers, and will make it available for new-build A330/A340 models in the future.

I personally prefer Boeings over Airbus.

But I think both make great aircraft.

I haven't flown on either, but as SIA are getting rid of all but 6of their A340s I'll go with that.

However, it really depends on the airline and the service levels.

I would say that the 777 is better (and this is not too informed), as it looks nicer, has a bigger range, has less fuel consumption, and carries more passengers.

Anyone can fly, only the best Soar.

The twin engine 777 has greater engine power especially for takeoff with a total thrust of over 180,000lbs versus the A340-200/300 with four 34,000lb thrust CFM56-5C4 engines with a total of only 136,000lbs.

flown AF IAH-CDG and return...on both 777 and A340.
Boeing was much more comfortable. Airbus seemed claustrophopic even though only 8 abreast.

The 340 however is a very smooth ride.

I have flown both 777 and 330/340, in fact, I was on a 330-200 last week. My personal opinion is that because of the design of the overhead bins and the overall cabin dimension, there is more headroom on the 777; and it's easier to stand up and position yourself into the window seat. The sidewalls on the 777 is more vertical and doesn't 'come up' to you as on the 330/340. If a lavatory is on the side of the aircraft, in the 777 you can stand straight up and there is a good distance to ceiling; while in 330/340 your head is very close to the ceiling. Personally, I prefer 777 over 330/340.

After saying all that, I don't think most passengers will notice these small difference. Legroom is much more important than headroom. And I agree that although statistics doesn't lie, people use statistics for their own purpose.
