More Seats In Coach On L1011s

Thu Mar 08, 2001 4:01 am

Why not take the multiple aisles out of L1011s and make them a single aisle aircraft. You could run the aisle down one side along the windows and then squeeze more seats in them. That way you could get at least 12 seats across. Then you could tighten the seat pitch to like 30 inches or so and squeeze in a few more rows. That would be enough seats to make up for the higher operating costs and you could continue to fly the great bird forever.

PS If you really needed even more you could take out First and or business class and add all coach seats. If you were like BA then you could even remove some of the exit doors and get even more in.

This would make the plane very profitable and I bet Delta could keep them.

Just imagine the person sitting by the window having to skip over 5 other pax. to answer nature's calling. And can you say 'lawsuits'? Remember all that fuss about blood clots in the legs- this is a surefire way to payout in court.

I don't know... with that Leo touting their 'simulated' leg-room, you never know what these guys are upto.  Smile I saw a picture here on one of the joke sections that showed all seats and no aisle- it's just freaky.

No I was being quite serious. The L1011 is the best plane ever built and it is a viable way to keep them flying. I bet you could put at least 600 passengers in coach on one of these.

Delta's continued commitment to no service and ammenities as well as their large owned fleet of L1011s in the desert makes them ideal for this modification and the continued flying of the type.

Dear wishihadalife,

Please be assured that we at Delta Airlines take all customer suggestions seriously, especially those that give us a means to increase our bottom line. We are also accepting submissions from students up to Grade 2 for our "Livery 2002 contest", but thats not relevant here.

Your suggestion is a "service enhancement" that we have considered seriously in the past, but were never able to implement for a variety of reasons. However, our plans call for a removal of all seats from the L1011 fleet in the near future and an installation of floor cushions along with safety belts.

Our valued passengers on "L" and "U" fares will be assigned leather strap hangers. These will be obtained as a result of our valued strategic partnership with the MARTA subway system in Atlanta.

Wishihadalife, our L1011s are a bridge between the Delta of the past and the Delta of the future. (I use bridge loosely since that is what we plan to build out of the scrap metal.) Nonetheless, we foresee many cycles of active life in these magnificent aircraft, all to be operated from our brand new Mojave hub.

Sincerely,
Your friendly Uncle Leo

More passengers mean lower fares correct? I suggest Troy-Bilt seats for installation on those Tristan planes. They'd be perfect, and would finally elimate the hassle of seat belts!

Hehehehe it would be funny to see the F/As , asking the first person in each row to "Pass down the food to the person at the window, or to the person next to the window seat etc etc..." Or when some people want to go to the toilet and have to wait for like 20 mins, until the other people move alll the way back or front....Sooo many other reasons that I don't feel like listing!!! :|

All joking aside, the primary reason why you couldn't do what wishihadalife is proposing is safety. There is no way you could evacuate that plane in a timely manner with only one aisle. I'm sure the airlines would love to cram more seats in, but there are safety regulations which bar them from doing it.

I think the safety issue could be overcome with a single aisle if you gave everyone parachutes.

Then we could see the L1011 live again in a high density seating configuration.

Instead of those tight and uncomfortable airline seats, why not use park benches... of course we would make them out of a lighter materia than cast iron. But think of the advantages. Plenty of room to stretch out if nobody else is in your row, that earthy honest feeling of a summers day in the park, and no unpleasant itchy fabrics to irritate your skin.

Benches are the wave of the future.

Dear QuadstarA343E!,

We at Delta take passengers comments as high prioirty items that we need to address as quickly as we can. I can personally assure you that service aboard our reconfigured L-1011s will be superior to our counterparts. A 5 pound bag of Delta brand snack mix will be passed around every 10 rows, and Coca-Cola in 2 liter bottles will be passed around to every 5 rows, with 5 Styrofoam brand cups. In an effort to please our customers, you are now required to share cups with seatmates, and ice will be available at $0.50 for your first ounce, and $0.25 per ounce thereafter. Ice purchases will be credited to your Skymiles account. * Hand sanitizer and Ziploc brand plastic bags will also be available for a nominal charge. Our new BEEFFAT (Bringing Extra Entertainment For a Fat charge) policy will be in effect, which includes a $15 charge to view the show "Safety Is Important" video. This charge INCLUDES complimentary usage of our safety equipment and cards.

We at Delta sincerely thank you for contacting us with your concerns.

Sincerely,

Uncle Leo

*L and U class ice purchases will NOT be eligible for Skymiles credit.
