How UA Chooses Its Fleet

My dad is a stockholder in UAL Corp. He got the annual report for 1998. The reason why United chose the A320 over the 737 is because it is roomier and more passenger/crew friendly. I have flown on both the 737 and A320 and I would go with the A320 any day. As for the 777 -- by far one of (if not) the best a/c in the air. I am glad United was the launch customer. I have BEEN (not flown) on a 777 at O'Hare, and it is by far the nicest plane I have ever been on. The 777 recieves the highest marks from United's business travellers. My mom is a F/A for UA, and she said that even though they make up 9% of United's passengers, they generate 43% of United's revenue. No wonder United picks aircraft that passengers prefer. The #1 reason why United is the best in the sky.

i flew on a UAL 777 last May from DEN-IAD and even though it was nice, I preferred the DC-10 over it. I thought the DC-10 seats were more comfortable although I liked the 777's individual TV's in each seat. My all time favorite UAL aircraft was the DC-8. I flew on one in 1988 from DEN-IAD. It had huge windows. I wish UAL still flew DC-8's.

I flew on a UA B777-222IGW last year from ORD to DEN. I was quite dissappointed. I perfered the B727-200 that I had been travelling on over the 777. The 777 is one of the lowest aircraft on my lists for preference, with only the 737 lower than it. Please don't ask me to explain why though, I have done it enough times in the past.

I think United Airlines has the best fleet in the U.S or in the world next to British Airways and Singapore Airlines.

I have been on there 737-300, 737-500, 747-400, 757-200 and A319 aircraft. The A319 is alot better than the 737 aircraft. I loved that aircraft. I flew on it from Los Angeles (LAX) to Seattle.

The Airbus A320 aircraft could beat any 737 anytime but I think the 737-900 will do really good. I think the A319 / A320 aircraft is better than the 737 aircraft because it is much more wider.

I think United Airlines should order more A319's for Shuttle By United but that will probally take a while.

UA has the exact same fleet as BA....if not better...(ie: the A319). The 777 economy seats (I've never flown in them) feel really uncomfortable just for 5 minutes. They are hard as a rock, and have NO legroom, whatsoever. My mom hears soooo many complaints (from pax. and FA's alike) that those YC seats are horrible. The business and first (which I have flown on) are very nice seats...if you have the miles, UPGRADE!!! You will be very glad you did!

Yes, I was in economy - very uncomfortable. I cannnot imagine being stuck in one of those seats for 12+ hours. The less than 2 hour trip (ORD-DEN) was bad enough to make me never want to fly that aircraft again.

Some good posts. I think UA and BA are the smartest airlines around in terms of fleet composition. Nothing ensures better competition than being known as an airline that might choose either manufacturer. As I've said in earlier posts, the commonality argument between the 320 series and thew 330/340 series is scary. No way would I want to ride in a plane being flown by a 320 pilot who just completed less than 7 days of cross-training for a jet twice the size.

Has anyone in the forum flown both the NG737 and the 320 series? Please comment on differences in comfort. This is Airbus's main pitch while Boeing claims higher efficiency and profitablity with the NG737. I always felt that the 320 series was closer in feel from a PAX point of view to the 757. AWA/TWA 757 service is the worst I've ever flown in coach. But 777 coach was more than fine. Hard ergonomical seats are proven to be more comfortable over long hauls. Think of long-distance autobahn cruising in Bimmers and MB's. You don't the Germans build rock hard seats just to be mean do you?

Lost Baggage, I flew a 737-700 by SW last night from Ontario CA to Sacramento, and i have to say noice wise I prefer the older generation 737 better, when the flaps are deployed on the 700 the noise is very high. Seat wise are comfortable, however, the 737NG, cannot be compared to the comfortability quietness and very beautiful interior of the A319 which I flew with UA, A320 Philippine airlines, and A321 Alitalia. These aircrafts did way better on my check list for comfortability than the 737-700 ive flown with SW and 737-800 with KLM.

For all you other people there Thank you for such a nice support you have for the A320 Aircraft family, and Ill have to say that the a318 will be probably a nice aircraft to fly with.

I liked the DC-8 and its huge windows also. The only thing I didn't like about it was there was a lot more space between windows than in other jets. If the seat rows were lined up with the windows so that each row had one big window, it would be great. But the last few times I flew United DC-8s, the seat rows had been moved closer together, so you often had to lean way forward or back to see out your piece of window, or your seat row was lined up with the space between windows, so you had no window at all, just a wall. I ended up walking through the plane writing down the numbers of the rows that were lined up comfortably with the windows so that I could ask for those seats when I booked my flights.

Thanks KL808. I haven't flown the NG's yet so I won't comment. But I must agree with your opinion on the Narrow-body Airbus family. My most recent comparison is between AWA's 757 service PHX-NWK and the return on an AWA 320 or 321. The Airbus has it down cold. The 757 looks sharper but too narrow, terrible seats/overhead space. I can't belive this old Boeing dog is admitting it. One other thing, I wouldn't use SW NG 737's as a perfect comparison. This airline simply isn't about comfort.

I think Boeing is going to face some very tough decisions about its family of aircraft 3-5 years from now. Business-wise, simply upgrading the old 737 makes sense, but only if they can continue to compete. Don't forget that Boeing ate all development costs for the NG 737's through 1998. From now on, every 737 they sell is gravy for the bottom line.

I've been on quite a few planes in the past 6 months (United DC-10 and 737, Northwest DC-9 and A320, two Alaska MD-80s). With the exception of the DC-9 (Northwest did a nice job refurbishing these), all of these coach seats were terrible. Is this just my bad luck or what?
